Title: Coilovers?
Post by: Spillane on 03 May 2007, 16:53
Quick question, the cheap coilovers on ebay and such, are they actually any good, or would I be better off paying that few hundred extra for a good make such as KW or FK? Are the cheap ones worth sh!t all!?

I want to go as low as possible, I think I'll need a set that will drop up to 100mm.

if you pay much less than £400 for brand new ones, they won't be much good.

If you want to go that low then buying cheap nasty ones could be dangerous!

for budget-ish FK highsports. alot of people use the supersport ones, but they are alot harsher and the set i fitted for a mate have corroded badly already in about 6 months. i've had no problems with the highsports.

I bought some streetsport ones cheep, ride is ok but stiff. If I had the money at the time I would have bought FK's.

Good stuff, I've heard some good things about the highsports alright, will have to stretch the budget and go for them by the sounds of it. I suppose you pay for what you get.

Cheers lads!

Does anyone know the exact lowering sizez for the FK Highsports? I've found a few places, and they say different. One saying 30-120mm and another saying 25-55mm??

And how does the price of £380 sound?

£380 sounds pretty good (does that include vat?) i have highsports and they definately go lower than 55mm! i easily have 80mm although i swear i've measured it as 100mm before?

I don't think it includes vat, but I've found other sets from germany for 510 euro, not too sure sterling wise what that is. I'd imagine the shipping would bring that to about 600 euro, so about £400 ish maybe, on ebay.de if ya want to check.

Sounds like I'll get these ones so then, pretty happy with the price, didn't think I'd get them at that nice price.

100mm sounds good, I'll have to measure it when they go on, must get them first. My wheels should have left germany today, at last

Cheers,

Alan

in this pic you can see the two rings adjusted against each other, you need to seperate them, then wind down the bottom one as far as you want, then wind down the upper ring and this will lower the spring with it. once you are happy with the height, wind up the lower ring and lock it off against the top one using the c spanners. measure the others at a fixed point, like the photo shows.

you need to keep winding it up then! it is a complete unit isn't it? most coilovers have a helper spring, a big almost washer like disc and the actual spring. if you have it wound all the way up and its still on the floor, something is wrong! get a photo up maybe?
