my brother has just brought himself a mk2 and has been told if he wants to change the rear discs he needs to replace the wheel bearings. is this true? :undecided: :huh:
ps its a 1.8 8v 86/87 reg

I think so. From what i gather the bearing is pressed into the disc.
Never done it myself though!

the bearings arn.t but the outer races are. You can tap them in easily with a hammer & drift. If you don't have a drift big enough, what I did was to pop the bearings out of the old disc and wrap em in 3 layers of kitchen towel, sit them in the new race and tap em in that way, job done.

errr.... help me out here, but what the hell is a drift? trying to get the new races in to the new disc\hub...
would knocking it in with a punch alternating sides do it?

ok, dont wory about the drift question found i was trying to bang it againt a ridge!
anyone know what order the bearing bits go in? brought a new bearing set, would that include everything i need to put in to the actual hub? i've got an inner and outer bearing (big and small) and a rubber thing with a spring in it... why on earth does the manual not give any details or pictures on this stage? it's the most complicated bit!!!!

fitting back in rear bearings
start by putting the new steel bit that you had to tap out of the disc make sure the hub is cleaned first at put a small bit of grease around the outer part of the bearing before tapping in , a handy way of tapping it in is to use the old part you tapped out this way it wont damage the new one do this to both sides of the disc and when the second side is in just look at the first one to make sure it didn't move and both of them are tapped up to the lip on the disc
when this is done get the part of bearing with the rollers in it and put some grease on the your hand and roll the bearing through the grease ensuring the grease works its way around all off the rollers
Now put the bigger bearing to the back of the disc adding some grease before putting it in
tap on the oil seal "the rubber with the spring" to the rear of the disc refit disc to axle, fit the smaller roller of the bearing adding a small bit of grease
first put on washer, push the washer with a screwdriver in a few places to make sure the bearning is in all the way, then stick the nut on.
when tighting nut tighting the nut up un till its tight and then turn it back a 1/4 of a turn, make sure the dics can turn freely by hand if not let the nut of a small bit more. then fit split pin and cap refiit brakes and wheel
when the wheel is tight just rock it from side to side to makes sure theres not to much play if theres loads of play tighten the nut on bearing a bit more.

why is there only about 5 lines in the manual on this?
the problem i have is that in the process of getting the old bits out it got pretty wrecked! nothing would budge out of the old disk...
from what i can see is the race needs to go down to the lower ridge, past the small lip it's currently getting stuck on. I cant seem to get the old race out of the old disk so cant use that as a drift :(
once thats done I can sort it. any ideas on alternative drifts?

when I did it I packed the old bearings in kitchen roll to protect the new race bearing surface, and used that to tap the new race in :)

yeah,i tried that, the old bearing didnt hold up too well... :undecided:
