Just been down to my nearest stockist of In Car Entertainment goodies
Well I was initially going to let my neighbour fit my ICE, but after having a good long think about it I decided to visit the boys at Source (anybody used them?).
http://www.sourcecars.com/
They are very enthusiastic and have won several awards for their installs and on the DB drag "scene". After drooling over all the goodies I have ordered the following:-
Kenwood DNX-7200
IPOD video link
Bluetooth hands free link
Can bus pulse thingy to help with the Sat nav so it doesn't get lost if it loses the GPS signal
Traffic avoidance link
Rear view camera (will come on automatically when in reverse and revert back to normal as soon as you come out of reverse.
Still deciding on whether or not to change the OEM speakers (Anyone any suggestions?)
Fitting day next Wednesday, so hopefully I'll get some piccies up by Thursday
-
Just checked out the Kenwood DNX-7200. Looks the business. I have a red Edition 30 and have been thinking about upgrading the ICE.
Hope you don't mind a couple of questions...
1. Does it have a built in CD player or changer?
2. Do the steering wheel controls still operate and the stereo output on the dashboard?
The kenwood really does look cool and has lots of good functions - do you mind if I ask you the total price including fitting?
Hope I get this right as it is my first post.
Woodster
-
Hi Woodster,
Welcome to the forum.
Price was £1600 all in including fitting. (not the cheapest I grant you but they are official Kenwood stockists and guarantee all their work for the lifetime it is fitted)
The head unit is motorised and tilts down and has a DVD player behind it which will play various formats CD, DVD films, MP3's on CD or DVD etc. You can specify a CD changer which would of course be extra. I do not have the multi function steering wheel, but the guy at Source did ask me if I had as they can build it in to work with the unit.
I have seen the unit working in a couple of cars and can say it looks as cool as FCUK
Hope this helps.

best put some better security in your car hurdy if your gonna go ahead with putting something like that in your dash.
-
Looks sweet...
I'm always a bit dubious of these double din stereos though - as they never have any 'face off' protection. I'm sure its got some form of security code - but thats something a thief will think about after they've torn it from your dash!
I've got my canbus, single din adapter and aerial converter sitting here. My Alpine iDA-X001 should be arriving shortly with the KCE-300BT bluetooth adapter... and then hopefully the car will turn up in the next few weeks

Hi
have a look at this post
http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=57166.0
I've attached some piccies and details of the DNX7200 fitted to my Golf V
The DNX7200 doesn't have a speed pulse input to allow for SATNAV corrections, as other Kenwoods do !
Any Queries let me know !
Si
-
As far as security goes, I've used an old original stereo (cost me £15) and cut and glued the front face to make a fake stereo cover.
Looks good enough for the untrained eye !
Si
-
This might sound stupid but can you post a pic of your cardboard thing you made and how you made it exactly? Security has been putting me off getting this but it looks the business. Thanks!
-
Hi
Not cardboard, I used the actual plastic front of the stereo (took ages of cutting glueing and melting) with the buttons/knobs glued on.
Not got my car with me so will post a piccy tomorrow.

Hmm,
I was simply thinking about blanking out the DNX 7200 and Kenwood logo's to make it look more like a less desirable proposition. The false fascia sounds like a good idea though.
Thanks for the link to the piccies. It was that thread that convinced me to go for the Kenwood in the first place...so it's all your fault s_tether

I have my eyes on a JVC model with Bluetooth.
Looks a nice clean unit and a bargain at under £600.

Which model is that then John?
Is it double din or single?

Its a double din, seen it on the car audio security website.

very good, what does it look like in situ, doesnt it stick out a bit?
-
Yes, it sticks out about 3-5mm, looks good enough for a casual look though. In the dark, just looks original.
-
How on earth did you get that off the original stereo?!
Do you have a pic of it on?
-
Hurdy... where did they install your reverse cam? Can you see it, or is it behind the number plate or something?
-
my god thats pricey! why dont you do something along the lines of........
http://www.digital-car.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=4858
http://youtube.com/watch?v=SA8r-Pey5KU
IIRC i did it all for about £200, that got me bluetooth, gps, 80gbs worth of music, touch screen, dvdrw, wifi..........you name it, i had it, carputers are far more fun than proper stereos,
i'll do the same again in my golf at some point.
-

Camera is only about 1.5cm in diameter and is located on the underside of the car's rear bumper. It is still higher up than the underside of the car and so there is no danger of catching it. You cannot see it unless your head is literally a foot from the floor. I'll get a piccie out when I can.
Blessani,
I hadn't thought about taking this route before, but it looks like a good method of getting all you want for not much outlay. My only issues would be having to make (or have made for me) a custom pod and the possibility of having to alter the dash when the car is only a couple of months old.
-
Sorry about the wait. :embarassed:
Here are the piccies of the reverse camera

The first view is with the camera at around 2 foot from the ground. The second is a close up at less than a foot away . it may look big, but it isn't

You've had your garage carpeted

Yeah...The wife's idea to use the old carpet from the living room at one end of the garage so she doesn't get her feet cold when doing the washing/getting stuff out of the fridges etc. :embarassed:

It looks HUUUUGEEEE!!!! Hows the pic on the screen? Does it save you hitting stuff?! Can you view it when you're driving normally - cause it'd be pretty cool seeing how close cars were behind you at the lights etc!
My gf's dad has a Merc ML63 and it has the camera hidden up where the lights for your numberplate is. You cant see it unless you really look for it.
I'm still undecided about which stereo I'm gonna get, but if it has a screen I quite fancy one of these bad boys!
-
Peeps,
The camera is tiny. It's about 2cm long and just over 1cm in diameter. The camera on the screen is excellent and it even senses when there is low light conditions and turns to black and white and looks like a night vision camera
The camera is linked up into the reverse light and comes on and goes off automatically when reverse is detected, so you cannot use it when travelling forward.
It definitely takes a week or so to get used to, but it does stop you hitting objects and makes parking up to objects easy. You can also see kiddies and narrow poles which a reverse detector may or may not see.
The lens is a "fisheye" lens and gives you a wider rear view than you would normally get from a normal camera. The screen is also a mirror view of what is behind you...so left is left and right is right. On some camera's the opposite applies, but the way I have it is the most natural.
I thought about having the camera above the reg plate, but it would have meant drilling through the bumper and taking the bumper off to fit it. I was shown one like this and it was more noticable than where I decided to have it located.

Definately sounds like a good idea... but depends on which stereo I get! I am seriously considering the Alpine iDA-X001 iPod controller - which is single DIN and doesnt have a suitable screen.
I've always considered myself to be a pretty good reverse parker... but I suppose this would let you get in even smaller spaces!
-

My garage is 100% carpeted....
-
p3eps, I'm also considering the new Alpine iDA-X001 headunit. I've been following an interesting thread on the AV Forums site http://www.avforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=468557 (http://www.avforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=468557). Useful if you want the views of some Alpine owners. Question is, do I upgrade the speakers at the same time? I'm also looking for a good, reliable installer in the East Midlands.

Booked mine in to have the speaker system done next Wednesday. See the "Hertz speakers" thread in the audio section. Source sounds are based in Sheffield and have already fitted my Kenwood head unit. They may not be close enough to you, but they are good.

Thanks Hurdy - might be a little too far north for me! I'm looking more Nottingham, Leicester, Northampton. But it's a start...
-
Alan...
I've been following the progress of this head unit since I pre-ordered one in February! The company always kept changing their dates etc, so I eventually cancelled it. I then ordered it again 4 weeks ago and also the KCE-300BT bluetooth adapter. As I hadnt heard anything from the company, I cancelled the order a few days ago.
I still visit the Honda Integra Type R forums from my last car, and a couple of the guys on there have them and rate it very highly!
I was in my local ICE shop 2 weeks ago and was looking at the iDA-X001 and playing with the controls (I had my 5G iPod with me). Its definately a HUGE improvement on the Alpine 9855R with iPod controls I had previously... but my local shop want £300 for the headunit and £150 for the BT adapter - but online I can get it for around £350 for the pair delivered.
I already have my fascia plate, CanBus adapter and aerial amplifier lying in my spare room! Now I just need the car and a stereo!! I'm going to have a crack at it myself!
-
Good luck - please keep us updated on progress. I also had the 9855R in my previous GTi, and found the controls very fiddly to use when searching playlists. I've just had a Parrot CK 3000 Evolution installed, so that's taken care of the Bluetooth handsfree side of things. Do you know if the iDA-X001 will work happily with the MFSW? I'd like to integrate the new Alpine as fully as possible with the car's controls. I guess the CanBus adaptor takes care of full intergration. Why the aerial amplifier, though?
-
If you get a CanBus for about £70 it will allow you to use the MFSW and also will make sure all the stereo wiring is correct. ie - the display will dim when you put the lights on etc!
I had a 9855R with the iPod adapter in my last car, and it drove me nuts! The slide 'glide touch' mechanism was a joke! If you were trying to find a playlist in the middle of the alphabet it was almost impossible unless you disconnected the ipod and did it with the click wheel! VERY frustrating!
I also had a Parrot CK3300... which was great. I just fancied trying Alpines built in one. Its less wiring for me to make a mess of!
The aerial adapter is just a lead that converts from the VW aerial plug to the one found in most aftermarket stereos (I think?!)
Where did they put your Parrot's Mic btw?
-
Hi p3eps - thanks for all of the valuable info! CanBus will go on to the shopping list too! You're absolutely right about the ""glide touch" - looked like a great idea in the showroom, but never worked in practice. I usually ended up with blisters attempting to navigate to the playlist I wanted  The Parrot's mic is clipped to the edge of the headlining above the rearview mirror. I've got the voice recognition working, so I can answer and hang up completely hands free. I haven't bothered with voice dialing yet. I'll definitely get a pro to do the install - last car radio I installed myself had manual tuning and a pointer that moved along the FM tuning range, a power lead and an aerial lead. ICE has become a little more complex since then... BTW, do you have the VW single DIN facia adapter with the cubby hole storage compartment?
-
I think my fascia adapter is made by Autoleads. It just has a hole for a single DIN stereo and a small cubby hole below. It cost about £12.
I'm hoping that with the CanBus adapter, the stereo install will be almost as straight forward and plugging the golf leads into the CanBus, and then it into the stereo. Thats the way it reads on the wiring diagrams... but I'm sure it'll be a bit more complicated!
If you slid your finger along the 'glide touch' a little too fast, you went right back to the start of the playlists. Too slow and it didnt move at all. If you started scrolling and then took your hand off it for 10 seconds whilst you stopped at traffic lights or something, the playlist menu dissapeared!!
The X001 works 'almost' the same as your iPod apart from the center button is to start searching, and theres another button for OK. It took a few shots to get used to it, but once you figure it out I think it'll be great! Its just a shame it has no CD/DVD player built in... cause then it'd be perfect!
Having said that, I've been driving my girlfriends brothers old car for the last 12 weeks whilst I wait for my Ed30 - and I havent put a CD in it yet! I have a USB/SD FM transmitter device that plays MP3's from my memory sticks straight to the radio. The X001 has the function to play from memory sticks... and also with the BT adapter you can stream music from your phone to it.
Looks like I need to get phoning round ICE suppliers tomorrow and see if anyone has both items in stock
-
I'm so sad that I've sat and added the album art into every album on my iPod so that the pics come up on the screen of the X001 (27gigs worth!!!).
Thats sheer boredom for you :nerd:
-
I tried the Autoleads adapter in my previous GTi with the Alpine. It wasn't bad, but the VW adapter was far better in matching the look/feel of the rest of the dashboard. Might be worth considering if you're not happy with the Autoleads version once it's installed. There's a good review of the new Alpine here:
http://reviews.cnet.com/car-electronics/alpine-ida-x001/4852-3424_7-32425827.html?tag=uoavrg (http://reviews.cnet.com/car-electronics/alpine-ida-x001/4852-3424_7-32425827.html?tag=uoavrg) When do you expect delivery of the Ed30? Mine's around a month old now, and enjoying every minute of it.

Google images  Been there, done that! What's the point in having an iPod if you don't turn into an obsessive-compulsive!

Can I get the VW one from my dealer? If so, do you have a part number I should ask for?
I'd rather pay an extra £20 or something for a VW one and have it look right than waste my time installing a cheap inferior one!
I've got my fingers crossed and hoping that the dealer was correct when he phoned me on Fri to tell me 'within 2 weeks' - so hopefully I can collect it on Saturday 9th June.
I'm getting very anxious... but also a bit scared of 1000miles without putting my foot down
Reviews seem mainly good - with the only real criticism being the speed for non 5G ipods (doent effect me as mine is 5G) and the Enter button not being in the center!
-
It was Amazon for me
-
Yes, got my VW single DIN adapter from a dealer. I don't have a part number, but I remember it was very easy to find on the parts computer. There's obviously the single DIN aperture, and below that a small "cubby hole" with a rubber mat - ideal for sunglases etc. Less than £20 as I recall. The Audioleads version wasn't a great match for the rest of the dashboard - definitely worth going for the VW version. 1000 miles seems like a lot, but I use my car for work, had a couple of long M1 trips, and managed it in around 10 days. Everything loosening up nicely now.
-
I'll give the dealer a phone today and see if they keep them in stock - or whether they can order me one in for the car arriving!
1000 miles is about 3 months driving for me usually... but I reckon it'll be done in a week or 2 when I get the car
-
I called the VW parts department today and got told it was £17 for the VW Fascia adapter with cubby hole.
They're going to keep one for me for when I pick up the car.
I also ordered the X001 - for £225 and the 300BT for £113... plus £10 postage. Not bad!!
The X001 is currently out of stock, but they're getting them in on the 2nd June - so hopefully I'll get it before the car :undecided:
-
£17 well spent  Keep me posted on the new Alpine!
-
1k0 857 058 3x1 is the part number for the VW single din unit.
I have been in the car audio SQ game for over 16 years abd I can highly recomend Source its only one of two companys i would ever let near my car the other is SQ+
-
That's a good recommendation. In fact I spoke to Source last week about putting an Alpine X001 in my Edition 30. However it seems that a new adapter currently in development will be required to allow functionality with my MFSW. Care to comment? Thanks.
-
I know connect2 were having some problems with the interface. Alpine also are making there own.
