I'm thinking of upgrading .... but I'm not sure which way to go, Vr6 or GTI?
I have always imagined the GTI to be the fun sporty one but the VR6 to be the fast cruiser? but I'm probably wrong.... What are the main differences and advantages etc.... ?
-
16v = 150bhp
Vr6 = 174bhp
The 16v is easily tuned up to around the standard figure of the vr6.
The Vr6 is reportedly a bit more tempremental. Prone to head gaskets.
But the Vr6 is not just a cruiser!
The best model to go for is the Vr6 Highline.
If you decide on the 16v then get one with as many toys as possible, air-con/leather etc.
-
Im selling my 16v in a week or so!
-
Oh and dont get a red one!
-
the difference in insurance for 16v vs vr6 can be quite large depending upon your circumstances etc
-
Ive never owned a mk3 gti so i cant comment but my vr6 is great its got 140k on the clock ive had it about 4 months now and not had any problems apart from my water pump which cost a few pennys to put right. If you do get a Vr the first thing i would do depending on what your using it for is swap the springs and dampers as they tend to be a bit soft for fast road use but ok if your going to be pounding the motorways. The noise from a Vr6 engine with a cone filter is a real bark raising to a howl after 4k revs the mid range punch is a real neck snapper. They can be used as a cruiser as the engine is silkey smooth or as a real overtaking weapon and if you have a few pennys to spend a really really fast car. When buying one just have your wits about and make sure you get a good one as some engine part can be expencive......
Oh im 28 with 5yrs no claims and clean licence and my insurance just cost me £347 :smug: (now i like being old)
-
Wow thats for all the info! I'm deffo leaning towards the VR6. Do you still get all the luxuries? I want the lot, Air con, leather... everything i can get really... I might as well seeing as this will be my every day runaround now the littluns here (baby's don't fit in the back of a GT-Four )
-
Leather is an option I think, except on the Highline where its standard.
Ditto with air-con.
-
ah i see, so what is the diffrence between the normal VR6 and the Highline?
-
Now ya got me! sure someone will tell us exactly.
-
Highline came in 2 colours mulberry and magic black. With matching leathers also colour coded rear spoiler and side trims. Badges where also different they look like shiny dominos with VR6 in them.
They come fully loaded with Air con, sunroof .. Oh and they don't have a plastic side skirt.
-
The highline did come in the 2 colours mentioned but there were 2 shades of black. They came with all the toys as some one else has said, the leather should be heated aswell. They should have a wood look gear knob and 6 spoke alloys as opposed to the bbs x spokes (that are the biggest arse to clean) If you do go to look at a highline just make sure it says VR6 highline on the log book if it dont then it aint. You can get some high spec vr6s with all the same toys as a highline that people will try to pass off as one.
-
Wow thanks for all the advice! I'm deffo after a highline then! one more question... What is a Wolfsburg GTI???? There is one for sale near me in silver, its a bit pricey so whats so different about them?
-
I dont think vw ever made one mate, ive seen these on ebay before its normaly when some one has gone mad and brought loads of Wolfsburg edition stuff like door pins and mats and then they try and flog it as a special edition......
Have a look hear you will see what i mean>>>>>>>>>>>>> http://search.ebay.co.uk/wolfsburg-golf_W0QQfromZR18QQfsopZ1QQsspagenameZADMEQ3aBQ3aTB2Q3aUKQ3a2 (http://search.ebay.co.uk/wolfsburg-golf_W0QQfromZR18QQfsopZ1QQsspagenameZADMEQ3aBQ3aTB2Q3aUKQ3a2)
-
oohhh thats odd.
This silver one has all the wolfsburg badges etc... I thought it might have been some super special edition import or something
-
A con more like to get more money for his car!
-
Yea Lens right mate its just Ebay tat stuck on.
-
a few other touches highlines have over standard VR6's is the A,B,C pillar trims are black not cream, there is a console aoround the handbrake lever. aircon standard climate was optional
Personally having owned a VR6 find the engine very heavy for cornering and also very thirsty on fuel.
the 16V although slightly less power is a far better all round car lighter engine for better handling and being only a 2litre better gas mileage.
however top spec 16V's are far harder to find than top spec VR6's

oh rly? .. guess i got lucky...
i guess the only extra highlines dont come with stock is cruise control?
oh and.. which flavour air-con does the highline have?
for example.. my valver has the "AC button" type.. but i hear some models have "climatronic"
-
I think overseer all highlines had climatronic im not 100% but ive neverseen a highline with a ac button...
