I am looking into getting a full respray, but im not sure on prices could someone tell me what kind of money i need to be spending.
Also if any one can recomend any good sprayers local to me (Birmingham) that would be usefull
-
i'm having my mk1 done. bare metal respray. its costing me 2500. its expensive but i know the paint finish i'll get will be like glass, the guy who's doin it for me is a perfectionist! lol
u could probably get it done cheaper than that, depends what ur having done, if theres any welding needed, engine bay being done??
-
About a grand for a starter then depending on colour, amount you want painted (inside door shuts ect) the skys the limit
-
Well i wanted the whole lot resprayed inside and out (metalic black) but 2500 is too much for me i just cant afford that at the moment i was willing to go up to around 1200 is it possible to do this with my amount of cash??
-
Not a chance in hell mate!
-
well mine is going down to bare metal. you could possibly get it done for that much as u could just scotch down the lacquer and top layer of paint and go from there, saves alot of time and effort meaning less money. i'd say ur looking 1500+
ur best taking ur golf round to a few garages for quotes and while your there ask for examples of their work so u know what the quality will be like.

Not a chance in hell mate!
Could you give me an estimate for just a body respray?
-
Uruk Hai already did! As he said an outside only starts at about a grand.
And thats not a quote - I'm not a spayer!
-
With a complete respray its not the actual spraying but most of the work is stripping the car and putting it back together.
If you delivered a totally stripped shell to a sprayer and said paint that for me and he didnt have much bodywork/rust/damage to sort then yes it could be done for less than a grand.
But then of course you would have to take it away again and put it back together!
-
depending on what needs sorting on the car, ie rust dents etc it will vary loads. if the inside of the car is fine and there is little or no rust then you'll be ok with £1500.
like len said its the time taking a car to pieces and re-building it that takes time which hikes the price up a fair bit. look in the yellow pages call up everyone, some places won't touch full re-sprays as they are too time consuming and not cost effective.
-
I will be preping it myself with the help of a friend, i will ring around tommorow for some prices. Also whilst im on here i want some new trim to complete the look do you know where i can get a big bumper pack, and how easy are they to fit is it just a clip off clip on job?
-
Apologies dont mean to hijack the thread but say you had a golf with "surface rust" and you had that panel resprayed. Would it look out of place compared to the rest of the car? Since it is new paint on one section and the rest of it will be like 16yr old paint.
It's just I'm looking for a golf but being a pretty old car I'm expecting one with some rust and obviously I'd like to sort it but dont want a patchy looking car. A full respray sounds like too much cash but I could possibly manage small areas that needs to be done.
Thanks

Well, a friend of mine who is a panel beater/sprayer says the going rate to prep a panel, door/wing/bonnet etc, is £70 a panel.
And £800 minimum total respray. I assumed that was a friend price.
@ GTI_Lee, A good body shop will colour code your car anyway. Ask them to buff the rest of your body work so the new panel does'nt stand out (It'll cost of course).

Ive just spent apprx 200 hrs prepping and painting my 3dr 16v.. a small amount of welding was required to the rear wheel arches (rot on wheelarch fixings) small rot repair on tailgate, 2 new genuine front wings... paint, materials, panels, decals, fixings, new windscreen. alone comes in at just under £1000!! plus the labour, 200hrs@£25pr/hr = £5000, plus vat Obviously Ive not had to pay for the labour, but that is a figure that any well run bodyshop should be charging for that type of work.. the stories that you hear of cars going in for a respray, and not seeing the light of day for a year or more is more than likely due to the money situation..ie not enough of it!
Most of the time that went on my car, was setting the door and wing gaps to perfection, closely followed by block sanding and polishing, this is where time runs away!
If you have a good car, mimimal rust, and origional paint..then £1500 is a good starting point! any less than that. corners are being cut!!
I would forget self prepping, you often make more work for the bodyshop, putting your c*ck ups right! just remove the lights and bumpers, trims.. leave the glass in place, this can be popped in minutes by the shop..

yeh i wouldnt prep it yourself unless you know what ur doin and can get it perfect. when i used to work in a bodyshop we used to get loads of jobs in which havent been prepped right.

It all depends where you go, what you want is a sprayer who does it in his own time but has all the gear, my mate had his car sprayed pearlescent and it came to around £1000 Paint was over £350..... so the work was around £650.....
