Title: Stalling at junctions
Post by: T_J_G on 30 April 2007, 12:18
when i press the clutch in the engine cuts out. does it cold/warm whatever...not every time though.

it doesn't jump though, just cuts out. though sometime the revs dip then go straight back up to idle. when it idles though it idles fine.

worth doing sparks, leads etc? also the alternator belt squeals sometime.

Any ideas?

Tim

does it have an automatic choke??

check the condition of the fanbelt for cracks. if it looks ok just tighten it, if not replace it. it wont have anything to do with cutting out though

i'm not sure but my ex had a mk2 which kept stalling at junctions. the choke flap was sticking in the carb and the base gasket had gone (they're quite hard to get hold of apparently) if its this your best taking the carb off and stripping and rebuilding it with new gaskets.

when my mk1 cabby was doing it it was when the automatic choke was knocking itself off and there wasnt enough warm air getting to the carb. if its a carb look under the bonnet and check if theres a pipe that looks like foil coming off the exhaust heat shield to the carb. if there sint one. put one on. they dont cost much. - Try this one first, its the most cost and time effective

hope this helps, sorry i've been a bit vage!

Thanks for your help, but it's an injection model.

I'd checke all the Usual service stuff.. filters (air and fuel) dizzy cap/ rotor arm/ leads. Check Water and oils (head gasket)...

Does the fuel pump sound noisy? Also check inlets and gaskets too...

If you suspect an induction leak, then with the engine running, spray WD40, SPARINGLY, around the joints and listen to the revs. If you have a leak, the revs should go up.

Do the standard sort of checks for the hunting idle problem, blue temp sender, throttle switches, vacuum leaks etc.

Clutch being dodgy shouldn't affect it.

i had this very problem with my 16v. would cut when i dipped the clutch - especially at junctions. i changed my isv which didn't help. also replaced all the vacuum hoses as i suspected an air leak too. mine turned out to be the micro switch on the throttle mech was not being pressed when the throttle was returning to idle. i don't know if 8v's have a simular switch? alligning this switch fixed the problem for me.

another thing if it's out of gear it'll return the idle spot on.

that is strange! if it returns to idle perfectly when not in gear but cuts when a gear is engaged with the clutch dipped?? any ideas anyone??

maybe worth getting the clutch done then..there goes another £171 that i really can't afford! got £100 put away for next payday but maybe i should get it done before?

Tim

oh and a big thank you to everyone that's helping me out at the moment  greatly appreciated!
