Now your gunna tell me to search the forums... which i have... but i was just wondering...
- Today it was 21 degrees outside, with a cool breeze
- Oil and coolant level at max
- I was driving up the M5 at a steady (speedo indicated) 80mph
- Coolant temp is normal
- Oil temp gets up to 102/104! (then the engine starts pinking due to carbon deposits in the head)
- Cruise at 65/70 and temp drops down to 96/98 (what i'd consider to be normal, plus the car does not pink at this temp)
Is this normal? Is a prolonged drive with the oil temp at 104 going to damage the car?
-
oil temp is completely normally worry when it gets up to 140ish!
As for the pinking, its usually ignition timing related - i think!
What car btw??
-
on a mark 2 8v, the oil temp was always between 98-104 when on the motorway when I had mine
-
sorry its a mk2 8v digi. i appreciate pinking is usually timing related, but timing/CO was sorted as per rubjonny's guide last week. my garage advised me of lots of carbon deposits in the head, but pinking has mostly gone after a cheap decoke (http://www.clubgti.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=13991&PN=5). as i say, its only when it gets 100 degrees plus that it pinks again...
another poor man's decoke i think...
anyway, 104 degrees is fine then :) all i wanted to know.

when was the oil last changed, maybe its getting a bit hotter coz its too thin?
try putting in some 15w 40 next time you come to do an oil change
-
oil was changed about 1500 -2000 miles ago, its fully synth 10w40, plus its a high miler engine at 220k.
so you'd recommend a thicker oil? fully or semi synth?
-
I would try and find some thicker oil, do they do 15w 50? i think halfords do it in like a green metal container.
