Yes thanks all happy with the repair job-needed a full rear  back quarter panel (3 door)

Its just great to have it back ..just as I remembered it a great drive...panicked tonight that I had left lights on but only one side....only to find I had flipped a leaver and put the side lights on. Its so damned sophisticated this car...all the toys

Now if only I can hold onto it till after the weekend!!

The police have closed lines of enquiries

Sorry to hear about your problems - and glad its back on the road

I always wondered what happened when a car was stolen and then recovered. Do you have any choice with regards to a payment or having the car back (considering it was damaged?) and presumably it isn't listed on the HPI register as stolen and recovered if it stays with you?

I always assumed ins companies paid out then sold the car if it was recovered.

Looks great BTW - enjoy the summer!

A very warm welcome back.

Reading your other posts in this thread, it would appear that you are happy with the repairs.  It might be worth keeping an eye on the wear pattern of the rear tyres, comparing the one closest too the damaged area against the "good" side.  You'll probably need to cover at least a 1,000miles before anything shows up.

Ideally, you need two Internet Explorer windows open at the same time (one for posting the reply in this forum, and the other with Photobucket open).  In Photobucket, underneath each thumbnail, are three lines of "code" (URL Link, HTML Tag, & IMG Code).  On the relevant piccy, left-click with your mouse so that the text in the box is highlighted, THEN right-click and select copy from the little drop-down menu.  Then switch back to the forum reply you previously started, right-click again, and select paste from the little drop-down menu.  When you have done this for each piccy you wish to upload, select the preview button, and, watch 'em appear in their full glory.  If you are happy with the layout, hit the post button!

I think the best way, is to actually save a copy of the original image on your own 'puter, then resize it, and then upload that new copy to Photobucket.

You don't really get any choice with minor damage on a stolen/recovered (recovered after a short period of time, before any ins co settlement) - they just repair the damage and had it back to you.  The only time you may get a choice is if it is either cat D or C right-off.

If the car is not recovered for a considerable period of time, and the insurance company pay you the value before recovery, then the ins co will sell it on, and may even give you first refusal.

The HPI stuff - dunno, but there is usually loads of data stored, even when a car has had a totally "innocent" existence!

Thansk TT -after much pahhaffing about I eventually worked the picture posting/signature thingy out.

Tracker? Not sure at the moment ...more expense....must keep the keys with me all times.

re the insurance ...just had to pay the coackwork company the excess ...no option...although I think they would have paid me out  if the car had not been reported found.

Checked with the police re "black marks on th records" but they say no one can easily access records to say it was stolen

Anyway i do like it a lot! Great fun...and better than if I had the money as struggled to easily find one as fully loaded as the car I bought

Thanks again

OK, cool.

Hmmm - forgive me, I'm not trying to "spoon feed" you.  It's just that there are some well-established crime statistics, which regarging burglaries and thefts, means that you are much more likely to get a repeat visit from the low-lifes.  They will know that you will either have your existing wheels back, or a new set of wheels - after about 6 weeks or so.

The prices of Tracker arn't too bad - for the Horizon, £574 for supply, fit and one year subscription, and £799 for supply, fit and lifetime subscription.

That is not true at all.  Any of the HPI type of checks will reveal a whole raft of info on your car.  Even simple things, like each time you renew or alter your insurance policy will be recorded, and if you phone around for a dozen or so quotes, they will all be recorded.  I'm not sure about simple accident repairs, but I would be pretty sure that a stolen and total loss, and a stolen recovered would be recorded.

Thanks TT re the HPI info ....I assume that this info could impact the resale value??
Re the tracker ....yes I understand what you are saying re the low life ...but am convinced that my car was not sepcifically targetted (Stolen from Gym on first visit with Golf)....I'll give it some thought.

Yes, most definately will have a resale impact.  Incidentally, my suspicions were confirmed - on last nights Fifth Gear, they stated that stolen vehicles definately do go on the likes of HPI registers.  Unfortunately, the detail on the registers won't actually state that the keys were stolen beforehand, so if more GTIs get nicked with keys, this could have an adverse effect on insurance for all GTI owners!  :nerd:

OK, I'm sure we all wish you only good fortune now with your GTI.
