Title: Guests!
Post by: Len on 26 April 2007, 11:15
What is it around here when the Guests can be more than double the number of members logged?

Why dont these people join up?

Dont they realise they are missing out on so much as there are sections they cant see?

Numpties!

I have very recently bought a Golf and new to the dub scene. I found this site, and being new to it I cannot easily see how i can join. I logged on to the site, read the home page etc, went into the forum, registered, then after a quick route around, read this post.

I've still not yet seen any link relating to joining..

maybe it'd be good to tell guests (again?!) how to "join up"..if only just for me

As you have "joined" mate perhaps you would care to go to the New Members Section and introduce yourself properly.

Welcome ex-guest!

All in good time

Maybe restrict access like other forum to make people join before viewing all areas? But that relies on 'guests' being bothered to do that. :undecided:

The Forum offers and I believe the Insurance and sponsor Sections.

Just logged off to check!
Its the whole Deals and Discounts Section and yes the Insurance bit.

Why the reticence Groper?

Short for George Roper or something else?

If guests want to just browse the forum for info then why not, yes if they create a login they get access to a couple of extra boards, but that's it. You can't post as a guest so there's no involvement in any banter etc nor will they get answers to their questions if they can't find their answers with a search as they can't post, so it's not really harming anyone as far as I can see.

many ar eprobably serch engine spiders.. google page cahing does htis a lot on another forum i visit

Search engine spiders should only show up in the server logs not as a Guest user.

Anyway, as pointed out, why shouldn't guests be able to browse the forum?
If they just want to see what it's like before joining, or just cos they want to find a bit of information about a car, or even to find a vw to buy and thus join the VW community.
If they like what they see, they'll join so that they can be part of the banter and goings on.

I think locked down forums are very discouraging, and if guests aren't welcome, they won't stick around.

they're guests because they all drive fords, and are quite possibly homosexuals. leave them where they are imo.

I didn't know if you had to "join" as well as register, as i thought you got a PM feature as well, but i couldn't see it anywhere after registering..hence asking what you get for "joining"

I believe I'm doing it the right way, i browsed, liked what i saw, read some rules, then registered. Len the reticence is because I'd like to gain a little more knowledge before posting so i don't bring up a post thats been covered 234214 times for example, and I'm waiting for the sale to go through on my Golf to make it mine too

And as a guest/registreee i agree that guests should be able to browse to get a feel for the scene, just like i did, as the dub scene is completely new for me and it made me feel more welcome having access to lots of places

Groper you do have to make 10 posts before you can send or receive PM's.

I only started this thread because all day yesterday there were more guests than memebers! At one point 43 guests and 17 members and I just thought that that was a ludicrous situation!
I certainly wasnt suggesting closing it off and people should be able to browse to see if they like it.
But in my mind thats a no brainer as whats not to like? Its so quick and easy to register why not?

Ahh, well I'm well on the way now, once posted in the Newbs section i should be there! Well now I've joined i can agree with you  It really isn't hard to join as you say, but have to say (coming from a completely new persons opinion) there wasn't that much telling me to tbh

And yes i agree, there is nothing not to like, which is welcoming

And you weren't far wrong with George, lol

My antispyware keeps deleting my cookie / login! This may be happening to others (minority I suspect!).

It's great that the forum seems to be growing.  I've noticed the most ever on line keeps going up.  JV must be chuffed after the upgrade

I'm a newbie but I signed up.
Like the groping man says, when you're new to it all you ain't equipped to join in the banter straight away.
I has also been reading lots of old posts to prepare for my upcoming MkII 8v hunt. Don't want to go boring you good people with all the same old Qs now do I?
