Title: Tracking and geometry
Post by: Rmachines on 25 April 2007, 11:12
My tracking is way out on my golf -  would it be acceptable to adjust it by eye?   Or should i just have it done professionally  (cant really afford it)

I also need my camber and everything else that goes with it done...  Is this expensive?

cheers

About £60 mate and the best money you will ever spend on your car!

Get it done right or you will just shred your tyres and you know how expensive that will be!
Plus your car will run better and handle right.

be careful and take it to a suitable garage though.

Im sure that i read that the golf mk3 tracking can only be adjusted from one side

I asked about changing my suspension and the mechanic (who I trust) said about £60-70 for tracking (bang on Len)

Hi Mate,  I am in the same position as you and have been phoning around for quotes.  Whereabouts are you.  There is a place in Feltham called feltham tyres and they quoted me £55.25 incl vat to adjust the tracking and the cambers.  They have both machines to adjust the alignment on a standard suspension as well as a lowered suspension.

Im just having a mare with my tracking at the moment took it to a place thats ment to be really good they wanted £40 ive been back 6 times now and its still well out they just cant get it right. The guy who runs the place says they dont really do many lowered cars but thats no good to me now and when i rang round for some one to do my camber they all said they would not touch it.  I need to find some one in the Notts area quick if any one knows any were as i cant afford to keep replacing my Toyo proxys.

i'd never go back to quackfit and the likes, it comes down to luck which mechanic you get doing it.

the mk3 golf is adjustable on both sides for track and camber, the mechanic who did my old car couldn't loosen locking nut on n/s so just did o/s track rod, ended up ripping the gaitor and I only had 1.5 turns lock one way and about 3.5 turns the other... didn't even bother going back to them and did it myself, borrowed some dunlop gauges and camber measurement.

i've yet to find someone local who I can trust...

I didnt have a problem getting some one to do the tracking even though it has been lowered it was just the camber that no one would touch i rang about 7 differant places they all said that id have to go to vw to get it done but because it was lowered they probably wouldnt touch it...

There must be some independant tyre place that has the right equipment in your area.

Yeah Len your right, I would have thought somewhere like Notts would definately have plenty of garages around. Derby, Leicester isnt to far away and even Brum is an easy drive.
