I dont think that any of the MK2's had a ignition live which means your radio is live even when the ignition is off and the amp will stay on as long as the head unit does

I had a sub in my previous Golf and the stereo in that was wired to a perminent live ? What do you mean when you say get around this problem ? When the radio goes off so does the sub !

You can splice into one of the live lines for something else behind the dash.  This will be a switched 12v, i.e. only on when ignition is on.  Your head unit will have a "switched" 12 v input and a continuous 12v input (to keep stored channels etc), so at the moment you will find that the "switched" 12v input is probably connected up to the continuous 12v.  If you do splice into a switched 12v, the head unit will switch off when you turn the ignition off.  However, it means if you want to listen to the radio, you always have to have the ignition fully on (as there is no "accessories" position at the ignition switch on the Mk2)  This means your fuel pump and your idle control valve will be buzzing away while you're listening to  the radio.  I did this for a while but have since converted back.  Dont know if its good to have the idle valve buzzing away with nothing flowing through it.

If you dont have a "remote on" wire you could use the electric aerial wire if your radio has one ?

Hum, will have to have a look, got a fairly good head unit and i can remember there being a few wires comming out the back of it that went nowhere. Thanks alot for your help :)

one of those wires will be for an automatic antenna
Regarding a switched 12 v, I cant remember what I used, it was maybe a wire leading to the fan control switch.  either way, u can figure it out with a voltmeter, see if you get 12v with ign on, that goes to 0v with ign off.  I think i used a wire for teh fan control; It worked fine for mine because I didn't have amps...you will need to be careful what load you're going to put through it.

Definately sounds like the remote wire isn't correct. I seem to remember the remote wire (auto aerial) is blue or yellow out of the back of the headunit? Check them all with a multimeter to find the one that powers up to 12v when the headunit comes on. Once you have the right one on the amp you shouldn't have a problem, headunit off and the amp goes off.

Wiring into a ignition switched live from the head unit results in you having to reset your clock and radio stations everytime you turn the ignition off/on. You could do it with the amp but may blow fuses due to the load. As a rule i always connect my amp direct to the battery with an inline fuse.

the pre-90 MK2s have a group of ign live spades on the rear of the fusebox, simply run a wire from this to the ign live feed to the head unit.  If you take it out you'll probably find it has the live & ign live feeds jumped together to the live feed which is why it doesn't switch off :)
