White gunge on the oil cap
Crap in the coolant
oil/water leaking out the head gasket
heavy miss fire
burning oil
Best thing is to get a compression tester in there and see.
Im sure i have missed a few common symptoms there, some one else will fill them in i'm sure

would the car still start up then ???

quite possibly yes... the amount of frothing dogs I see at the auctions suggests that most blown head gaskets will run after a fashion...

Some will run fine, others will run rough, allot wont start at all.
