if u cant afford the 'gti' mk3, then try the 'driver' this normally has alloys/sports seats etc and is pretty much the same but has a 1800cc engine, as for the tdi yeah will be good on fuel, not sure of the power out puts on mk3 tdis?? 90 or 115 rings a bell but dont quote me on it!!, they can be tuned to a fair bit more but not as much as mk4 (pd tdi engines) the driver would be your best option if u cant afford a gti ;D

evening moe,

the mk3 cl is only 75 or maybe 90bhp so the engine is less in peformance and the trim is going to be less interesting.

you can get a mk2 tdi but it's pretty rare. as kniterider says, you can get a 'driver' version of both the mk2 and 3 so they might be worth a go :)

Don't think you can get a Mk2 TDI, it will have been the TD producing about 75 bhp, certainly not the TDI engine as fitted to Mk3 Golfs/Audi's etc. Probably would have been badged a CL-TD as well.

As an alternative to the Mk3 GTI, I would look at the Mk3 TDI. Performance won't be far short of the GTI when you are moving and overtaking as the torque is huge. Disregard the 0-60 times as they are worthless on the road, but instead look at the 30-50/50-70 times as they are more real life.

OK, the suspension will be a bit softer, but that can be fixed with a new set. The only thing that yo might find is that they will be high mileage examples and te price will probably still be high compared to the GTI of a similar age/mileage.

Serviceing costs will be higher as well, as the oil/filter will need to be changed more frequently, but you have to offset this against the fuel economy/insurace etc that you will be paying.

HTH,

John.

also the mk3 gti's (8v and 16v) are both 2.0s

at the end of the day there is a reason the gti's cost more to insure.. ;)

VW did make a MK2 GTD, I think it was basically the GTI, but with a Diesel engine in it, and thus much less power.
It has the classic Mk2 GTI look, but the lack of power of older diesel engine.

Go for the driver if you can't afford/find a good GTI.
