I can recommend the hydraulic lifters from GSF cos I got them about 2 years ago and they quietened the engine down a lot! Is your oil pump ok though?

Hydraulic lifters do get tired and can become noisy, although not excesively unless the spring inside, (which you cant get at) is broken up. The said spring is the component that gets tired and/or the ball seat in the tappet is no longer perfect.
You may of course have a performance cam and quick bleed down tappets which are noisy by design anyway.

have a loo on the "other" forum, there is a lifter refurb guide, they do come apart!!!

Alternatively £30 quid for a set of 8 on ebay! I have them in my valver, and they are sweet!

hiy,

i get a tapping in all gears between the 1,500 to 2,000 revs. it sounds like only one tappet is out of time tbh, but i've been told it wont make any difference to my engine and not to worry about it immedietly, is it worth getting it changed? and is that whats happening with the main thread?

You sure it's your tappets and not the engine pinking? both sound pretty similar and when I got mine tuned up my noisy tappets magically dissapeared. :)

it has been tuned but i did not give the guy rubjonnys set up guide so i dont know if it was set up as it should be. would it make any difference if blue temp sender was not unplugged or timing not set at 2500 rpm also as for tapping or pinking i think i will have to get someone to drive the car past me so i can hear it better

pinking almost sounds like metal cracking when you put the engine under load (i.e. 5th gear, 2k revs and full throttle) and is a bit erratic. noisey tappets make more of a regular slapping noise, often worse when the engine is cold.

slapping noises when the engine is hot could indicate "piston slap", but would be heard coming through the block and not the head. i havent heard of a mk2 with piston slap though.

my 8v digi was set up last week using rubjonny's guide but still pinks as the head needs a de-coke, and is therefore suffering from hot-spots (i.e. fuel is igniting before its meant to)

humm... just read the comments... and now i think my car is pinking and having tappet problems... well best get saving for some bits and peices...

i've got some engine flush from halfords, wondering if this might help at all i i run this through my car for 15 mins and then change the oil??? worth a try? the guy at the garage said to try it, but my air cooled dub-fanatic friend said not to bother...
