Hi, Been looking on the bay for a nice mk2 interior and have managed to find one. Unfortunatley it is a fixed based seat type, not the height adjustable jobby like my current seats.
Is it an easy job to swap the frames over so that the new seats go onto the old frames ?
Cheers,
S

seat frames
firstly a coulpe of quick questions, I assume this is for a GTi ? if so and the drivers seat is not height adjustable on the replacement seats they wont change over as the bolster support bars on the GTi seats are too high.
year the seats came from as MK2 seats changed in design around 1990 from a tilt handle to the gearstick side of the seat to a pull handle to the front drivers side door side of the seat also the 1990 spec seats are slightly bigger and bolsters from 1990 onwards are not interchangable with ones pre 1990
ideally to get both bases to tilt you need a LHD drivers seat subframe ie a RHD passenger seat side and you have a pair that are height adjustable.
hope this helps

Yes, its a 1990 8v 3door

I have picked up a Rainbow interior with 2 Passenger seats, not sure what year. I'm going to change over the bases tonight (hopefully)
Is there any decent way of moving the latch mech from near side to off side? or is it something that I need to live with.

Am only looking to get the drivers to tilt at the mo. Didnt realise you could make the passenger seat tilt as well. Thats something for the future.
Thanks

there are quite a few visual differences between pre & post 90 seats, when you have em side by side it'll become obvious. You cant swap the base frames from driver to passenger becasue the seatbelt latch is welded on the slider and the forward/back handle will be on the wrong side.
You might be able to swap the sliders, but I don't think it will be easy!
Also you can get pre-90 MK2s regged in 90 on a G plate, best way to tell is to check the hazard switch. If its a post-90 the hazard switch is on the steering column, if its on the dash its a pre-90 :)

Don't know if this helps but I did a seat swap in my 89 gti Big Bumper.
I got hold of a good condition passenger seat with Rainbow cloth from a five door. Taking the covers and cushions off carefully it was possible to swap these for a perfect fit on the original tilt adjustable drivers seat frame. This solved the worn out cover issue and retained an original look.
