Right... I've been on this forum long enough for most of you to know that I’m a bit crazy – after all, how else can you explain driving a brand new Golf R32 to within 12 miles of Africa and then selling it after 3 months of ownership, or the number of cars I have got through in the last couple of years?
Anyway, I have two dilemmas that I have come about this morning due to having to fork out more than expected on an imminent mortgage and also because I have spotted an investment opportunity abroad that’s too good to miss. So…
I have to sell my Golf GTI Edition 30
However, I have of course checked the availability of Edition 30’s before making this decision and they are still available to order – come on, do any of you really think I’d sell the car if I couldn’t get another one? I’d rather go to some seedy third world country and sell some of my organs…
So I will be putting in an order for another Edition 30 with identical spec. to arrive sometime in October/November – already rang some dealers and they can do that. Problem is I can’t make up my mind between manual and DSG… I am planning on keeping the Edition 30 and buying another VW with DSG next year anyway but to be honest, I really missed DSG in the Edition 30 although I have a strong suspicion that it was more then just DSG that I missed when I part-ex'd the R32 for the Edition 30 … However, I might miss the manual if I had DSG so I am in a quandary. My main questions are:
1. DSG – is it reliable in the long term as I don’t want to fork out massive sums for repairs when the warranty runs out
2. Tuning – how well do DSG cars take tuning as I have heard and read about restrictions to the power output.
3. What would you choose and why?
Please help as this is doing my head in, thanks.
And NO, the plate will not be sold with the car.

There's one up for Phil!! You gonna buy it Phil? You'd have to eat some serious ED30 humble pie!!
The money i saved getting my GTi as opposed to the ED30 has just enabled me to buy a new house and keep the car.
Hard luck Illyun! Reckon you should get top wack for yours though as it looks mint.
By the way, if i were you i wouldn't order another one. You've never been happy with this one and the mark 6 Golf will be 6 months closer by october time.

Sorry, got carried away there. I think you know my preference
Ive had 2 DSG diesels and both chipped with wads of torque and never had any issues with the DSG gearbox surging/slipping. If you have looked at my recent thread on how fast the DSG Ed30 is you will know where my heart and head lie
Awful having to sell your first ED30, but i'm sure you'll make the right decision with the next one

I'm not sure if I am not happy with it - its just that the R32 was such a beast of a car - plus its a limited edition and ideal to keep. I can get an R32 next year (which I am planning to do)

Illyun,
Did you know that they are bringing out a golf RSI as a ltd edition of 500 with the v6 and 300ps

Yes... I have my eye on it. I hope it comes out in 2008 though. Bit concerned about the engine size as its only a 3 litre engine - I thought it was going to be a 3.6

  good luck with the house... don't think mine would be suitable for you because its:
Manual and not DSG
3-door and not 5-door
an Edition 30 and not a standard GTI
-
good luck with the move into the housing market illyan, i think u should buy the R32 With dsg, you will always think "oh i wish i bought one of those instead", kinda like the edition 30 didnt quite hit the mark, good as it is but will never be the "FULL SUNDAY ROAST " as the r32 is.

I never did like all the veg!

I know, but it does in my case because that money is going to be invested and recouped within 3-4 months - I just hope I know what I'm doing
-
DSG reliability - you might wanna pop over to one of the UK TT forums, because the DSG was used first in the TT 3.2.
If anyone would have come across any long term reliability issues, I guess they would be the first to know!
-
I've decided to go with DSG as I was thinking about what to go for today as I drove back from Bristol to Ipswich. The M4 was congested and then the M25 was closed on 3 lanes so I decided to do a 1 1/2 hour country blast from Reading to Watford via countless villages and country lanes. The manual was great fun but I thought 'is this it'... the DSG would have been faster and although maybe not quite as involving it allows you to explore other areas of the car like speed  In every other area DSG wins hands-down.
-
Nice one - don't forget the launch control advantage too!
Here's me in my old R32 doing its stuff in the rain!

Doc you nutter - you didn't have your seat belt on
Also, I hate seeing anything that reminds me of the Mk5 R32 - I really miss that car but I don't think I could live with the fuel consumption and ridiculous tax band... but I am planning on getting one next year  if my investments go as planned. I'll probably be picking up the car next year, but keep the Edition 30 too.

Cool

Thanks for that.. I've driven a DSG R32 for 10 weeks and covered 11,000 miles in that time - yes 11,000 - and although the Evo reviewer Neil has some valid points, I personally was won over to DSG because it suits the R32 brilliantly. In fact so much so that you'd almost think it was designed for the R32. I would never buy a manual R32 after that experience.

still no luck shifting the ed 30 illyan, i see youve dropped the price by 3k, no seriuos bidders yet?

Nope, looks like its going to go to the Stealers... I'll still be making enough on the money -hopefully - to make it worthwhile. Plus I'll end up with a new zero mileage DSG Edition 30 in October. I was going to order another via the stealers but I've got a sneaky suspicion that Edition 30's will be available to order for a while yet. So I will be going down the broker route in July and getting some money off - I went through Broadspeed and was offer over £1000 off a couple of weeks ago but I wasn't ready to order at the time.
