My 8v anniversary is getting a bit tired (121k) and needs a new clutch and cambelt, and the gearbox is getting a bit whiney... If it's not too pricey, as in £1000 or less, do you think it would be better to put in a recon 16v engine and gearbox instead?
I'm getting worried as i'm using it a lot to drive from london to cornwall (surfing)

Sell yours and get a 16v! Far easier and less costly!
You need the ECU and loom from a 16v.
-
a 16v anniversary is rarer than rockinghorse plop... and expensive.
ordinary 16v golfs look a bit dull by comparison (in my opinion anyway)

i remember seeing a few websites for companies who do all kinds of VW conversions, including insane things like putting vr6 engines in polos, does anyone know any?

just down the road from us mate... down passed farnham by hindhead.
they have a 6n polo with the 4x4 1.8t 20v turbo drive train and engine from and audi TT!!!
if your enquiring, find out how much it would cost to stick a vr6 in a gti engine bay while your at it!

Nah you only get about £2500 for 'em - I've already checked!!

fi you loook around local breakers yards you could possibly get the engine gearbox wiring , gearselector and ecu for around £500 but make sure you keep and eye on them when they are removing it !!!! then you can get it install for £500 and you done

to be honest 121k is nothing for these cars. If all it needs is a clutch, gearbox and cambelt - then replace the parts. The clutch and gearbox can be done at the same time saving you labour and i've paid £50 labour to have a cambelt done on my brother's 8v - the cambelt kit was only £20 from GSF...
If you actually want to a conversion and are just looking for excuses - then that's a different matter :smug:
