they never made a mk3 turbo.... well, except a diesel.

if your wanting a turbo, have a look at the recent PVW (april 2007), there is a yellow mk3 in there with a 2.0 8v turbo, i think abt did it, your easily looking at a few grand, (maybe as much as 4 or 5k) for the turbo conversion.

then there is the engine conversion route, you could get a full 1.8 20v turbo engine from the mk4, and drop that into your mk3... but then your looking at £1500 just for the labour, and the guys i was talking to about it are saying u need to spend a good 4-5k on the engine alone to make a truely (250bhp) rapid mk3 which actually goes round corners. you could do the conversion for cheaper, but u get wat you pay for!

and then u get onto supercharging, which is a totally different story

Why not look at Nitrous?

A kit fitted is about £500.

thats a huge idea len..

it could be set up as a progressive kit, so could work in a similar way to turbo, adding over the rev range, rather than all in 1 lump... generally thought to be kinder to your engine, but AFAIK uses more NOS, can be easily switched off so you only use it when 'really' needed... a.k.a: all the damn time

The thing with NO2 thought is you need a strong engine!
I mean you can get kits that will ADD 200bhp!
That kind of extra power is only for short bursts but it only takes a nano second to blow an engine!
But I believe if you were sensible with it your engine will be fine.

I am seriously considering it!

i am actually loving the sound of this....

stainless manifold and full exhaust system, cheeky 50 shot of NOS, hello 180bhp from the 8v engine.

save up for the 20V T mate, thats what I would like.

Of course would have to keep the Mk3 as well

So besides lots of cash, would need a garage as well

tell me about it mate... thats one of the things i love about the VAG family, so many engines to fit in so many cars

at the moment im going down the line of keeping the mk3 as a daily, finish her off with a few little bits, and keep her in 2.0 8v guise...

then get some sort of mk2 / mk1 plaything...
quite fancing a mk1 cab with a 2.0 16v engine in it.... topless summer cruising

My 16v can keep up with a 20v T!

well when u go stat battling... the mk4 1.8t engine isnt that great in standard form.

150bhp or 180bhp isnt masses, and with your 16v len running at about 175, with the difference in weight, it should be able to do a 25th anniversary mk4!

IMHO... for a mk3 youd be best off with a rebuilt vr6 engine, decent exhaust system, induction kit, and some map fettling could see the naughty side of 200bhp, which is ample for daily road use!!!

I dont honestly think mine is putting out that much and have booked another RR session to check it.

But once I knew where my peak power is I had no trouble keeping up with Billy's 20v T!

When I have some cash (god knows when at the mo), I would interested in sticking mine on a rolling road.

Dont think it would be as good as yours though Len

Well put it this way Billy's figure was 167bhp on a standard 20v T. So if it should be 150bhp then mine should be no more than 165bhp. More like the high 150's.
But we shall see!

If you can get in on one of these club days then it costs £25/£30 for a session.
There are some coming up in Reading and Peterborough, both of which are a bit far for you.

thats the sort of figure i was thinkin of.... to be honest i wouldnt expect more than about a 10% increase from a decent exhaust and induction kit combo, so realistically i think your at around the 160 - 165 mark more than the 175 mark.

While we are on the subject....has anyone ever tried turbo/supercharging an abf? i no it would take someone with more money than sense as you could buy a vr and probably charge it for less but im curious, wonder what the power output would be, how it would drive ect.....wish i had more money than sense...

Turbo would be the best and cheapest option.

I guess you could get as much as you want! If money no object then 400bhp would be possible.
