Post by: BobbyT on 15 April 2007, 20:30
Hi all, well my mk1 is bust again, i thought it was a faulty fuel pump but i have had this changed and it is still playing up! the simtoms are as follows: You start the car and it keeps stalling and running at about 600 rpm until it warms up a bit and when you start driving the car kind of bunny hops, this keeps getting worse until the car stops all together, the fuel accumulater is quite loud too?? any ideas would be great as i seem to be chucking money at it and its not getting fixed!

Lift the  back seats and remove the fuel sender and lift pump get a torch shine it in the hole and see if it's shiny or rusty in there :)

drop a magnet on the end of a piece of string in there & check the magnet every few days, after a couple of weeks you should have picked up most of the loose rust.  If your filler neck is rusty replace it, then once the tank is clear replace the filter.  If it still does it then rust has got into the fuel systewm and you may have to replace the lot to flush it all out!
