Quick question, do you really need your rear wiper? i mean when it's raining does your back screen get all messy or can you shave it off? just asking as my friends mini doenst have one or my mates BMW so i'm thinking do i really need one as the motor has been taken out and wiper pulled off, would it be better to just seal the whole and smooth it off?

My MK2 16v doesnt have a rear wiper, i dont really miss it since it was rarely that useful in my old car, if its hard to see behind me i just use my mirrors instead.

I find that after a day or 2 from washing my car, the back end is completely covered in crap! The back end just seems to attract sh!t to it, more so than any other car i've had. Especially after a run on the motorway. I would leave it on, if you don't like the way it sticks up when parked just lay it flat and it virtually dissapears anyway, more so if you have a black hatch surround.

The reason it attracts dirt to the rear of the car is because of the aerodynamics, and co-efficient of drag, (of which a golf has a better rating than a porsche 911) when going along a vacuum is produced at the back of the car, this "sticks" the car to ground better, and allows it to go faster, with a higher amount of safety.
There is no need for it, unless you want to use it to clean the shyte off the screen.

A higher coefficient of drag makes it harder to go faster in the first place tho ;)

rain x the rear window and ditch the wiper

er... correct.

He said better (ie. lower), not higher!

My mistake, my first thought when a 911 was mentioned was a new type which I'd be shocked if it had a worse Cd and therefore deduced you meant higher. Wasn't being arsey or anything!

It depends how often you wash your car. If you wash often then no, but if not then yes as the back does get very caked in crap!
-
rekon i'd wash the mk2 everyweekend or so, i rekon it's got to go

the drag coefficient is the exact reason VW didn't lay the wiper flat in the first place, so lay it flat and raise your drag coefficient or lose it all together and don't see b@gger all on a rainy day!!!
