Hi,
I am new to here and just thought I would introduce myself. I am looking to buy a golf gti but do not have much to spend - prob around £2000. Can I pick up a good example for this amount? I am not the most knowledgeable regarding cars so I am obviously cautious. What sort of mileage should I be looking for. Basically for this money will I be buying a bad gti? Can anyone help?

That all depends on what mark you want!
Welcome btw

Well I want a Mk 2 really or maybe a Mk 3. Something that isn't going to cause me no end of problems.

2 grand will get you a very nice mk2. That will be mint run out spec territory. As for the mk3, it'll also get a good one but i'm not too clued up on them. Anyway, it doesn't matter 'cuz you want a mk2 not a mk3!

Welcome.
Go for a Mk3 mate for less maintainance!
That amount will get you a good 97/98 model with reasonable mileage.

hello and welcome
as said above, £2k should get you a pretty decent mark 2 or mark 3. My advice would be that if you are going for a mark 3 gor for the 16v at least, or otherwise you will be disappointed.

Hmmm. if its a gti that you want, you obviously want the car that offers the best driver experience? i would seriously go for the mk2. unless you can stretch to a mk3 vr6?

Welcome.
IMHO, MkII has more character. For 2K, you should get a very good one and possibly have change for that personal touch.
MkIII is ok, but a looked after clean MkII looks better than a looked after clean MkIII.

Hi again,
Thanks for responding. I def prefer the Mk2. Reliability does worry me though. What sort of mileage should I be looking for (realisticaly)? Are there any good sites where I can find decent gti's on the market?

MK3 all the way for everyday or MK2 for weekend fun..... Have a look on this site for a motor, there should be a few about

i did a survey a whlie ago on this site. the topic might still exist a few pages back in chat vw related?
anyway... it seems most people driving mk2's have an average odometer reading of about 130k-160k.
