Does anyone know if i can find like a countdown facility for service in the highline comp, im on longlife but would be good to know if somewhere it tells you roughly when its gonna need a trip to the stealers. cheers peeps
-
Ignition on, seat belt fastened, hold down the trip counter reset button for 2 seconds and it will tell you. The reason you need the belt fastened is that you need a display clear of any other warnings.
It will say something like "Service due in xxx miles or yyy days"
-
cheers
-
Phil, why are you on LongLife servicing?
VW/Audi now don't recommend LongLife on high performance motors, especially if they are driven as they were <cough> designed for! :nerd:
-
well ive checked the car, and it says 3500 to service or 167 days, i bought the car 24th sept 06 so i spose it wants to go in 1 yr after i bought it. ive done 7000 miles in it so far. must be on 1 yearly set up, so why do they have longlife oil if the cars on a yearly service setup?? :undecided:. sounds abit of a con

LongLife oils - oh boy, here we go:
ALL engines are factory filled with LongLife oils, irrespective of which servicing regime they may use, or which country of export they are destined for.
Certain export countries are unable to use LongLife servicing, mainly due to poor quality fuels, but that doesn't affect the factory filled LongLife oil.
Like I have countlessly said elsewhere on this (and others) forum, the LongLife oil is a much higher specificiation compared to the non-LongLife 502.00 standard. The LongLife oil is particularly suited to turbochargers, and high performance engines, due to an additional high temperature test. The VW LongLife oil specifications are considerably more stringent than the "generic" API and ACEA standards.
The GTI, along with any "performance" VAG motor may be OK on the LongLife serving regime, but only if driven like a granny - BUT, I'm quite sure we don't have any silver-surfers who are also GTI owners  - hence my continued strong recommendation, along with the now "official line" from VW and Audi, that GTI/high performance motors should be changed to the time/distance servicing, but still use the higher spec LongLife oils!

What's your source for the "official line" from VW/Audi on the LongLife service regime?

Well thanks for that TT - I independently came to a decision recently to switch my '06 GTi to Time/Distance and insisted that 'Longlife' oil was used at my recent 12month service (7k miles) . Mind you the Dealer thought I was crazy
Oh, - and sorry to disappoint you - but at 61, I most definately am a 'Silver Surfer'

Erm, all VW/Audi etc, sales brochures from early 2006, all current owners handbooks, and (those which actually know what they are talking about ) the main stealer service advisors.
Don't bother asking the stealer parts departments - as I have repeatedly been given the WRONG info on oils, and other things, besides!

Yup, some stealers just don't get it! What brand/type of oil was used?
Oh, - and sorry to disappoint you - but at 61, I most definately am a 'Silver Surfer'
Oh  . . . but I bet you don't drive it like a granny, though!

Castrol - I took my own!
No, I still manage to drive in a 'spirited' manner despite my advancing years (My time providing 'on event' Rally Service for Safety Devices/Pennti Airikkala gave me a good grounding in fast but safe driving...)

OK, but what type of Castrol, as they make about 25 different engine oils !!

Ohh - now that does sound cool !!!
-
Totally agree with the above comments, as had my services schedules changed to yearly before picking the car up, my only concern would be, would we actually get longlife oil or get tucked up by the dealers.

Castrol Edge 5w-30

Buy your own oil, and take it in with you. Providing it meets the correct VW standards, they can't refuse - and you'll probably save a bob or two as well.

Yup, exactly the same as the highline!
