Title: baffles
Post by: m4nesh on 03 February 2004, 15:45

Elo

Can anyone tell inform me what baffles are? Went down to the exhausts shop and the guizer there said that my baffles have collapsed said it needs seeing to and the damage will be ?45.

Does this price sound reasonable and is is important. should i ask for a stainless middle box?

cheers

A baffle(s) is a section(s) inside your exhaust that provides the noise dampening ...

Might effect the gas flow slightly if they're badly corroded, so in turn affect performance. Basically he's trying to say u need a new section of exhaust although it's not blowing.

If nothing seems to be wrong I'd say leave it !

Well if you got the money go for it !

If you can stretch to a bit more look for a second hand stainless system on somewhere like eBay.

?120 got me a full Magnex system with a nice phat 6x4 Inch oval !

Brrrroooooooooomm ..... Brrrroooooooooomm

Have a look at this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2457272526&category=9889

Normally when they say baffles they mean the piece of pipe that has the holes in it inside the exhaust box and this allows the airflow to go through the pipe but the sound waves eminate outwards towards the sound deadening.

This normally rots with the moisture inside the box and has as you said collasped to that its no longer working as it should.

Heres a cut away pic I found on the net to show whats inside an exhaust box.

A:   This is the entry pipe into the silencer from the exhaust system, the void next to this is the expansion area of the silencer and is normally packed with sound deadening and this absorbs the sound waves/pulses.

B:   These are the "baffles".

C:   These are the outlet pipes, This is a silencer from a MGF and has two tail pipes.

Hope that helps.
