Done about 2000 miles now since March 1st.
Run in as per handbook, but by no means been over gentle with it.
Been increasing speed and revs but not thrashed it yet.
Missus has used it for work - about 8 miles each way - for a few weeks.
Done a few long runs - Newcastle and back, Scotland and back (from Doncaster).
Oil has gone from top of shoulder on dip stick to about half way down.
Is this normal ?
What are other peoples experiences in the first few thousand miles ?
Does it change beyond that ?

I've has my GTI from new since sept 06, done 3500 miles. my oil has gone down to about three fifths. I think it is normal and I was planning on topping it up.
-
Mine has done 1350 miles and the oil has not moved at all. I was expecting it to drop though as i have read they do use a bit at first.

Done about 1300 miles. Followed the handbook instuctions about running in.
The oil level has not moved at all.
I have read in another post that some like to drink abit of oil when new.
-
From what i can gather from people coming into work for oil they do tend to use a bit of oil when running in, i think this is more because things like the big ends etc need to bed in, at least that is the theory, as i had to do the same when i put new big end shells in my motor, they should be fine after about 5k miles or so. If not might just be worth popping into a dealership and asking for some advice.

done 6000 miles used 3 quarters of 1 litre. longlife cost £13.
-
Done 4500 miles and the R32 hasn't drunk any oil although it does like the odd tipple in the petrol though!

Thanks for the replies - lots of variations it seems.
I guess it is comforting that mine's not the only one to use a bit
and I guess its dependent on lots of different factors.
I topped it up with about 300ml.
BTW - Read the manual and it says that in some circumstances,
oil consumption can be up 1 litre per 1000km !!
At £13 - £14 a litre...I hope not.

Mains and big-end shell bearings will have no effect on oil consumption - new or knackered! :nerd:
The main reason of excessive running in oil consumption is due to the "honing" effect of the piston rings on the cylinder bore. The increased oil consumption will continue, for as long as the engine revs are allowed to "build up" to the rev limiter. Therefore, after the initial 1,500 or so miles of running in, regular red-lining (obviously when both the coolant and oil temperatures are at the normal levels) will help to actually stabilise oil consuption.

You can get 504.00 oil much cheaper than that! I've got a price of about £6.20 + Gordons share, per litre!

hey TT,
would you care to say where from?

OK, where to start:
GSF do Fuchs Titan GT1 LongLife III 5w30 504.00/507.00 in 4litre packs @ £8 +VAT per litre. (http://www.fuchs-oil.de/home_en.html)
John Clayden & Partners, 9 Frensham Road, Sweet Briar Industrial Estate, Norwich England NR3 2BT Tel : 00 44 1603 789924, Fax : 00 44 1603 417335 - do two different 504.00/507.00 oils:
Castrol SLX LongLife III @ £8.14 +vat per litre for a 60 litre drum, or
Elf Solaris LLX @ £5.20 +vat per litre for a 60litre drum, or 4x5litres for ish£5.70 + vat per litre.
I do have one other "trade" supplier, but I can't post those details, nevertheless, the price is there, or thereabouts what John Clayden quoted.

MODS - can this thread be moved to the maintenance section?
