Title: MFA & rev counter trouble
Post by: lewis on 03 February 2004, 11:39
Hi all

I am having some trouble with my rev counter and MFA. Neither seems to work properly, the mfa does display but you cannot change any of the functions or enter the ?hidden? section. The rev counter needle stays flat bottom when you rev the car at stand still and if you are driving sometimes I have noticed it blips up to a thousand rpm and the drops back down. There is defiantly power to the unit as the Speedo, temp & fuel gauge all work. I have removed the second fuse in from the right to try and reset it (left the fuse out over night) as suggested in other threads but this seemed to make no difference. Last night I removed the whole unit to check the connections on the back. I could see two connections and both seemed to be well fixed. All I can think of now is to check the rev counter connection to the coil but this is well hidden compared to my mk1 golf so if someone could tell me where the connection is or anything else I could try that I haven?t thought about that would be a great help.

Thanks

Lewis

Thanks for that blue. I sent the bloke a message yesterday but he hasn?t got back to me yet. The only thing different to my unit is that they only have 120mph on the clock not 140mph like mine. Do you know whether this will make a difference? Do the 140?s usually come with the 2.0L engine maybe?

The Haynes "You and your Golf" book mentions this as the symptoms of a known fault in (IIRC) 90 spec Mk2s.  Says that most people just fit a replacement.

Don't go for the Ebay ones.

You need the single pin type for post 90 golfs.

Thanks for all your help Lads. Still got the problem though but think I will live with it until I can find a cheap replacement.
