Title: Not starting again, new problem
Post by: 92Mk2Gti on 11 April 2007, 11:01
Hi all, thanks loads for all the help in the past. Now I have to ask for your help once again as my golf is refusing to start again.

When I turn the key I hear the furl pump prime for the usual amount of time but all I get when i try to start it is a loud clicking from under the bonnet, it seems to be coming from the starter motor, and the engine doesn't turn over. I have read about the solenoid in there clicking or something, i guess it copuld be that? I tested all other electric things in the car which seem to be working fine except sometimes when the battery power seems to be intermittent - ignition lights flash on and off and a relay ticks on and off in the fuse box too. When the car was in this state I tried the electric window and that was intermittent too, like it was jerky but uniformly so, in time with the ticking.

My earth wires seem to be ok, except the one from the bonnet to the body (surely this won't affect anything) The main earth lead from battery to gear box is a year old.

Car was running well before.

I read obout rocking the car in gear, do you think this will work? going to try it tomorrow-  at work at the moment, I tried to jump it with leads yeasterday but no luck. Also gave the starter motor a good wack or two but maybe i should give it a bit more, starter motor is well rusty so perhaps a new one could be in order? are they expensive?

I checked all fuses, they are ok, could it be a relay problem?

Sorry for the long post, hope someone can help..

sounds liek the starter is dead, but it may have jammed. Try putting it in 3rd & rock back & forth as said, that works works for our polo when it does the same thing :)

i think gsf/euro car parts do starters for £60ish but you must give them your old one, much better than a 2nd hand one that you know nothing about. at least you`ll have peace of mind

Cause it goes without saying...

First check the voltage on your battery. It may have enough to energize the solenoid, but not to turn the starter.
Saying that though, it does sound like starter but check battery first.

Update:

Just been out and tried the rocking thing, very difficult because she's parked on a hill, it didn't help but i might try it again when i have a mate with me.
Tried to remove the starter motor to have a look at it but it's not easy, got one bolt out but the other two are tough to get to and i just broke the ratchet in my socket set somehow.. cheap tat from halfrauds. Are there just three bolts holding the starter motor on? Any tips for undoing the bottom two?

Any further ideas of what the problem might be?

When i turn the ignition on now it just ticks on and off including the normal dash lights, tick... tock... tick... tock... etc, when i try to start it it just ticks faster ticktockticktock. You can hear the relays ticking also but the loud clicking from the starter motor has gone. If i turn the lights on the ticking stops, maybe i should have tried to start it with the lights on....?!

I'm going to call the AA out if i can't start it by tomorrow, i'm hoping to go to santa pod on sunday!

you need to support the engine when you take the starter out as a couple of the bolts go thru the front engine mount!

good job i couldn't undo them then.....
does it still sound like the starter motor, with the new ignition ticking thing, or could it be something different?
seems like its something electircal to me
if it is the starter i should be able to bump start it right?

The worst thing that will happen is the the engine will drop, and you wont be able to get the bolts back in ;)
It does sound like the starter yeah, if you can hear a click from the motor thats the solonoid popping and for whatever reason the motor isn't turning.  If you've tried jump starting it then its probably not the battery at fault.
You should be able to bump start it if it is indeed the starter thats gone :)

cheers rubjonny, i don't even get the clicking from the starter motor anymore though
just the tick tock of the ignition lights

i'll try bumping it later when i have a friend here

It should bump start ok. Easy if you are on a hill too!
You could also try jump lead starting it from another car to check the battery. Just for fault diagnoses though more than anything.

Thanks for all the help guys   , got it going again, I think the starter motor must have been jammed and rocking the car in gear freed it. battery must have died with all the messing about to begin with so it still wouldn't start. The alarm had a mad half hour as the battery was weak so disconnected the battery and left it for a while. Managed to jump start it after reconnecting battery. battery is old so bought new one and she's been fine since. Still a couple of problems with the alarm but nothing to stop me going to santa pod tomorrow

Cleaned, polished and oil change today    :nerd:

This thread all sounds a bit too good to be true to me. My 1990 16v died in February. I got in one day, went to start it, it made a few funny noises then nothing happened, tried again and all the electrics failed. I tried a few things including charging the battery but it was all looking a bit terminal (thousands spent on other problems over the years etc). Decided enough was enough, put it in the garage and bought a mondeo as a run around!

Got the garage roof fixed this week so had to push the Golf into the drive. It still looks a brilliant car so i decided to trawl the forum for hints as to what might be wrong. I charged the battery, cleaned as many electrical connections as i could, put it in 3rd and rocked it back and forward a few times. I got in, noticed the clock was working, promising, turned the key... and of course, it started first time!!!

These cars are unbelievable! This is just one of many little tricks that seem to bring them back from the dead. Now i've got a mint Golf that actually works just in time for the summer! Awesome!
