Title: Droaning Sound
Post by: TanK_VW on 10 April 2007, 13:10
Hi all,

First off i have a mk3 1.8 GL (not sure if that matters for diagnoise)

Basically this issue is a droaning sound where about 50mph.  I think its coming from the front left wheel, what could it be?

Cheers

Does it change or go when cornering? Is it worse turning right or left?

It gets worse when turning right.

Then it could be a CV joint on the driveshaft. On the left side. (nearside)

Sorry dunno never done a Golf! done loads of other cars!

Its a relatively easy job if you got the right tools, like big sockets and a long bar plus ball joint splitters. And dont forget to drain the gearbox!

If it was exactly the same as my Pug I could give ya a step by step. Takes a bout half an hour on that!

would have thought its basically the same principle on most cars..

any idea how i would check if that is the correct issue? any visual clues?

Not really. You can check the CV boot.

I mean generally what you describe its usually CV joint. A wheel bearing drones all the time. And you have the classic opposite side thing. Sound on the left and steer right.

I mean I guess you have checked simple things like tyre pressure and wheel nuts.

yeah checked that. all fine. i had a feeling it was the CV joint.  is it going to be safe to drive with it like that for 2 weeks as i need payday to come... or is it a do it now job?

If its only just started then a couple of weeks should be fine as long as you drive steady and dont rag it rounds corners!

Had both go on a Renault 21 and was fine for 3 weeks and I was doing 70 miles each way all on twisty country roads!

hey guys,

reading you thoughts on Tank_Mk3's issue and possibly think I have a similar problem, have noticed a 'clicking' sound every now and again which appears to be coming from drivers side front wheel area, wasnt sure if it was a bracke issue or wheel bearing, but maybe you think it could be a cv joint if its a 'clicky' noise?

(sorry to hijack the thread, but your thoguhts appreciated)

cheers Andy

It gets worse when turning right.

its a droaning sound not a clicking and its there when i get to about 50mph and gets worse when on a bend to the right. is this going to be the bearings?

CV joints do sort of click, but its not now and again. Will be all the time during cornering. Its more like a clunk or thud.

Tank yours does sound more like wheel bearings. jack up that wheel and see how much movement there is in the wheel.
