Title: Rust issues!
Post by: Nebbo on 06 April 2007, 20:41
good evening folks - I am looking at a certain car, obviously VW and these are the points of interest.

What is the best way to overcome these and how much normally would you reckon it could cost to put right?

As always your input is very important to me so chuck us your views

Cheers!

The rust on the bottom of the door and the rear of the car could be sorted with a grinder, I would just grind it all out and if you go through the metal in any places then your best bet would to have the area filled with weld or if needed a small patch welding in. I'm not so sure about the rust by the door hinge as I've never had rust in that area but it looks like it would be a door off job to do propperly and if left it could (if it hasnt allready) eventually weaken the point where the hinge is welded to the door pilar.

yeah the door and boot aren't really a disaster, but it is just that rott by the hinge.  The problem is the car is like 300 miles away, so i cannot really show up and go "nah not for me sorry".  Decisions, decisions!  :undecided:

I'd be carefull mate, in my experiance you allmost allways find more than the bits you can see once you start grinding out the obvious bits.

not sure how much he wants but there are tidy golfs out there for not much money, just keep looking. Too sort that rust out by the hinge is going to require alot of work. I'd save your petrol money

Thanks guys, I think your all correct - just did not want to tell myself the worse.  I think for the price of the car it is not going to be worth it.  Been looking for a so called "tidy golf" for so so long now, but to no avail.  So yeah if you know of one going please send it my way, my budget is around £1300.

Cheers for your help guys!

Yeah walk well away that rust is terrible, i have seen a couple go there, ideally wing would have to come off also and check for rot under there big job, keep looking there are still a few about, mine has done 205k and not a spot in those places so keep looking, don't let mileage put you off too much

Yes, gotta agree with simpson. Forget miles its the condition of the body that counts.
