Title: Which Sat nav system?
Post by: Hurdy on 06 April 2007, 19:11
Hi all,

I have settled on a non-OEM sat-nav system for my ED 30 and wondered if anyone had heard anything about it whether it is good or bad.?

It is a Kenwood DNX-7200 and will have the optional Bluetooth and FULL iPOD control (including Video from the iPOD). Link below:-

http://www.justkenwood.co.uk/stock01/dnx7200.asp

Luckily my neighbour does install for a living (mainly Merc's Beemers and Audi's) and so I will get mates rates for price of the unit and fitting.

If anyone knows of something as good or better post your alternatives on here please.
Also another question is does the OEM satnav system give you full control of the iPOD and let you see the track ID tags and Album covers etc?

Hi Hurdy

I'll be looking to fit something to mine when it arrives, havent deicded whether to get a tom tom or a proper install, although the proper install will look much nicer. and it would solve the problem of an ipod dock!

Let us know how you get on

OEM doesn't show track names or artwork.  love to hear how the kenwood install goes, esp how the bluetooth works?  any chance of some pics when its done?

Been to Donny motorshow today and saw the DNX-7200 installed and using the iPOD. It shows all the tracks by name, album etc and gives full control via the touch screen or the remote and also lets you use the video from your iPOD with th right connection.

I was hoping to get my neighbour to let me look in on the install and if possible take pictures, of the various steps in case I want to put it back to standard or upgrade in future and do it myself.

I'll second that and can recommend the glove box edition!

I use my Nokia N80 phone and TomTom mobile.

Very good, it's only £130 (you already need the phone) and the bluetooth phone prep means the instructions are piped through the radio.

Just need a decent holder for it and sorted.  As I take my phone with me any way, no danger of being lazy and leaving it in the car to get nicked!

I've had Pioneer SatNav/Audio and now Alpine SatNav/Audio and prefer the Alpine's interface and fuller spoken guide. Also displays full iPod info on the touch-screen. It's not much more expensive than the OEM SatNav but has a far superior audio amp, so I'd say it's better value than the factory option.

Hi

I have just completed my install of the DNX7200, including the bluetooth module, but not the IPOD adpator. I have, however, fitted a 8GB USB stick to it (extension cable to small "glovebox") with MP3s on. It plays them superb, as long as they are tagged correctly, including Album, Artist, Song and Cover Art.

Also plays DIVX movies well (AVI etc) from DVDR, but not from the memory stick.

Again will do a slideshow of JPGs from DVDR, but not from the memory stick.

Updates the SATNAV with the SD card slot (add POIs and Speed Cameras)

The trim ring that comes with the stereo is a filler piece that fits between it and the fascia adaptor bought elsewhere. This looks rubbish, so I plastic welded and filled/painted the trim to make it one piece.

On the wiring side I managed to convert the existing loom with an adaptor (VW plug to ISO connector). This works fine but there is no lights, ignition, reverse or handbrake connections readily available. I got an ignition feed from the fusebox and as the DNX7200 senses when it is sunset and sunrise (yes really !) the display switches to and from night mode itself. I connected the handbrake wire from the DNX7200 to earth so I can watch DVD while driving (my son sits in the middle in the rear) and use the bluetooth whilst in motion (most functions disabled with handbrake on normally). There is a connection for reverse on the DNX7200 for reverse camera but I don't use that yet.

You could but a readily available unit that plugs in the VW harness and supplies all these signals but it is about £70-£100.

Hope this if use, it really is a superb bit of kit. If you have any more questions please ask !

Oh and another thing. You'll notice all over on the web it's about £1000, but I found it at BASSJUNKIES.COM for £850, they even threw in an iPOD interface lead for free !

I did source the bluetooth adaptor from elsewhere for about £60 though as it was £100 from BASSJUNKIES.

Just look on BASSJUNKIES.COM and it seems they've realised they've sold it too cheap as they've put it up to 950, glad I bought it when I did !

Just Kenwood have it for 899 though.

You need to open an account (free) here:-

http://photobucket.com/

Once you have an account open hit the browse button in your album and it will take you to your photos on your PC. Double click on the photo you want and it will download onto photobucket in your album. Then simply click on the img file below the picture and it automatically copies it for you. Click paste where you want the image to be shown and voila your picture will be shown in your posting :nerd:

Phone works fine, no trouble at all with it, uploading phone book one at a time via bluetooth is pain though !

It is very good overall, only things that annoy me slightly are:

On startup it takes about a minute until the USB Key is ready for access
Cannot play DIVX from USB Key
Cannot fast forward or rewind DIVX on DVDR

System looks really nice and I'm very tempted rather than going down the parrot/ipod adaptor/vw sat nav from ebay route....

two questions - did you keep the audio controls on the steering wheel working (if not, do you know if the £70 adaptor cable does)? Is there anyway of connecting the factory cd autochanger (not really important once the ipod connector is there but would just finish off the install...)

cheers

Si

I haven't got controls on my wheel, sorry, and I think only Kenwood CD changers fit (according to the manual).

Although there are adapters to allow Kenwood (and others) CD changers to work on standard VW stereos !

Maybe there is some adapter which allows a VW changer to work on a Kenwood stereo ?

One update from Kenwood on DIVX from USB. Apparantely you can do this but it is really choosy about the format.
I've tried but can't get it to work from USB, but from DVD is fine.
