right, recently (6mths now) fitted new rings and shells. also rebuilt the head with new followers and VAG stem seals.
I'm using a but of oil, doesn't seem to smoke much - until you get above 4k revs under full throttle - then ther is a bit of whiteish smoke out the back!
Compression was iirc 185-190 across the cylinders, so I know they are OK!
What is the likely culpritt? I'm hoping its not the valve stems or guides!
If it is then it will have to stay put, cos I ain't taking the head off again!
Anything else I can check???

How much oil over 1000 miles is it using?

I'd say a good litre!
I'm tempted to go to 15/40 see if that helps!

Thats not too bad to be honest mate I know that on a vaux the manufacturer give 1l over a 1000 miles as acceptable on an oil consumption chk and what with the car being 15+ years old then thats not bad I also know the 16v's were renound for using oil from new.

I'm gonna have to keep a closer eye on it, soI know exactly how much I'm getting thru.
It jsut feels like I'm always topping it up!

Hi, what oil you on, that can make a difference, fully synthetic is expensive but worth it, if you lose that its def stem seals, but with 15/40 unless its a good spec you could get some rattles with from good revving.

its Comma 10/40 at the mo.going to do a change soon and go back to synta silver, see if that makes a difference!

1L over 1000 miles is nothing to worry about mate

I've just read on another forum that comma oil is the dogs - I'll maybe give something else a try anyway!
