has anybody had them out? if so how, because ive wanted to replace them for a while and now they are blown and i need to replace them! i knew this day would come! the actual pods seem to move a bit as though they have to be turned but they dont seem to want to go.
-
Yea I looked at them and managed to free one side, the nearside, but the drivers side I couldnt budge.
-
on my 1.4/94 they just unscrewed
-
snaps, which way? mine are really tough?, it may be different because mine ( i should have said ) is a cab but it must be similar. did you get one side totally out len or just one side of one side if that makes sense?! if you did how? did it need turning, which way if you can remember clockwise or anti?
-
Sorry tom was yonks ago! (years)
I know I had to twist it but cant remember which way. Yes I did get the passenger side out completely. The drivers side wouldnt budge and didnt know whether to turn it the same way as the other side or opposite! :undecided:

Are we talking about the same ones? the ones that sit under the grilles on top of the dash? they just lever out with a screw driver, i replaced them with sony speakers from argos that sit straight in, and sound much better.
-
That was brave of you! (screwdriver near speaker)
definitely had to twist mine!
-
cheers for all your help. mine seem to twist too, only slightly though, tried a bit of leverage with a screwdriver and it didnt seem the way to go, maybe there are different sorts, my ones are under the grilles on the dash but they arnt speakers as such though, like custom built tweter pods. ill try giving them a bit more force i think, cant hurt, they are blown now anyway!
-
Could ya do me a favour and measure the hole?
Been thinking about putting some mid/tweeters in there for a bit more sound.
I used JBL 202's in my other car. 2 1/2 inch mid/tweets.
-
im pretty sure they are 13cms, thats just by eye though, ill get the tape measure out tommorrow, got the whole pod out today, a screwdriver did the trick, snapped one of the little clips but there is about six so one wont hurt, they dont move much anyway!
complely unrelated question now but, i had the cam belt done when i first got the car and afterwards it made like a constant, but not rythmic squeaking/grinding noise it was like very fast intermittant bursts and it got worse as the car/belt warmed up and continued all through the rev range ( not that i revved it that high as i didnt want to mess it up good, but it wasnt just on tickover!) i took it back to where i had it done and was told the noise would go away after 100 or so miles as the belt needed to wear in and slacken a bit. sure enough it did go away, ive done max 2000 miles since then and today the exact same noise returned, on tickover but went almost as soon as i got in the car to drive off. it sounds like its coming from the bottom of the cambelt, water pump kind of area ( at least it is on a renault!) any ideas, the belt does kind of look worn again but he said he did the pullys and tensioners so it shouldnt be. got 12 months warranty anyway so im kind of hoping it does snap! brand new engine for me!! na i doubt it, probably just a new belt, but ill have no engine!
-
Surely not that big! 130mm thats 5 inches. Yea check please!
Your cambelt thing dont sound right to me. Have fitted about 5 myself and never had any noises.
I would take it back and say to the guy that fitted it that you dont think its right and do a double take on that warranty, make you you know exactly what is covered.
Mind you it could be the water pump and that will be unrelated.

tried some spks i had in the holes today, 13cms is right, im going to fit them properly tomorrow, the grille even still fits, with the spks i have anyway, if you have a dremel or that kind of thing you may need to cut off the bit where you would screw the spks down ( the bits you would use if screwing them to a door/pod/parcel shelf) or the grille clips may be blocked but you may be lucky, like me. you wont need to screw them, the grill should do the holding down, im yet to see if the spk cone will hit the grille though, tommorow will tell!
yeah ill take it back to him, he is a friend of the family so he should be sound about it even if the engine does go bang, he has business insurance! he said it was to do with the way the tensioner worked or something, i queried it at the time, he said he set the belt tight to allow for it to slacken, as if it slackened and it was set right then it would then be too slack, if that makes sense. the noise did go away, just like he said, i dont think it is the water pump, i did at first, before i had him check it, when it went away i thought nothing else of it. It is however that kind of water pump clattery noise, but quiet a bit louder. if it was coming from my actual engine id scrap the car, put it that way! when it was first done and the engine/ belt got hot it became like a high pitched whine.
-
Thanks for that Tom. Will be looking around at what speakers I can fit in there then!
Sounds as if he over tightened the belt then! Should have a tiny bit of slack in it.
-
Now I know the size of speakers that will fit in the dash I'm thinking of doing this!
1. Some 130mm components with the mid in the dash and put the tweeters on the A post.
I have a different mounting in mind similar to an instrument pod I've seen.
2. Change the 3 ways I have in the front doors to 2 way Infinity Kappa's and amp them!
Thought I'd add this into here as well (from Car Audio)

deffo but len im real sorry and hope you havnt brought any yet but they are 10 cms in the dash, i know i said 13 but i looked at some other speakers i had today and i thought they were 15s, sure enough they were 13s and the ones ive put in today were 10s, you were right 13s are miles too big! hope this hasnt put you out, kappers are solid speakers, the tweeters with them are mint. have you looked at the dead quick tweeter builds sticky thread in the audio forums? that has got to be done!
