Title: mk3 standard tweeter pods in the dash
Post by: tommk3cab on 05 April 2007, 15:30
has anybody had them out? if so how, because ive wanted to replace them for a while and now they are blown and i need to replace them! i knew this day would come! the actual pods seem to move a bit as though they have to be turned but they dont seem to want to go.

I replaced mine.

As far as I recall they're just clipped in.  Just pop them out with a screwdriver.  if not then there must be some obvious screws, as I didn't have any trouble with them.

I just replaced all the front speakers with some "In-Phase" components.  I did a bit of careful jigsawing with some MDF to make adapters so the new tweeters fitted in the original holes, but I guess you could just butcher the original plastic bits if you wanted.

yeah cheers for the info, i managed to get them out and am thinking of fitting some 13cm spks in there, they fit but im yet to see if the speaker cones will hit the grilles once they are replaced, ill find out tommorow. some new tweeters would be ideal but its the £Â£Ã‚£ i havnt got! there is a thread on here about some pillar mounts. ill do that when i get the £Â£Ã‚£!.

Fair enough.  I wanted to keep everything looking completely stock so a quick glance through the windows doesn't reveal anything worth pinching.

I guess I slightly sacrifice sound stage quality by keeping them in the dash (they're not beaming sound straight into your ears like pillar mounts would), but I'm happier knowing it looks like a stock setup with a different HU... until you listen to it of course...

Now I know the size of speakers that will fit in the dash I'm thinking of doing this!

1. Some 130mm components with the mid in the dash and put the tweeters on the A post.
I have a different mounting in mind similar to an instrument pod I've seen.

2. Change the 3 ways I have in the front doors to 2 way Infinity Kappa's and amp them!

deffo but len im real sorry and hope you havnt brought any yet but they are 10 cms in the dash, i know i said 13 but i looked at some other speakers i had today and i thought they were 15s, sure enough they were 13s and the ones ive put in today were 10s, you were right 13s are miles too big! hope this hasnt put you out of pocket. kappers are solid speakers, the tweeters with the componant sets are mint. have you thought about kappa componants? like these, for the doors? if you have the cash of course!

http://caraudiosecurity.com/shop/product/products_id/3915.html

or am i getting confused again and thats what you ment?

then just some normal 2 way 10 cm sonys or you could probably even forget the dash speakers all together with some amped kappas!

Have you looked at the dead quick tweeter builds sticky thread in the audio forums, that has got to be done!

Phew!

LOL!
Nah mate I would have checked myself before spending cash!

Hmmm may not be worth doing then as I thought with a 130mm you could get a bit of uuuummmmf!

4" kappa 2 ways then just in the dash, no need for tweetres on the A post.

yeah the ones i have put in today just make the voices nice and clear, got them running through a crossover network so they sound quiet nice, allows me to take some of the mid and high out of my headunit for a clearer sub signal and i can run my botched up vibe componants in the doors ( with no tweeter as they broke long ago!) at a higher power off the amp, giving me some nice punchy mid bass. glad i didnt mess you up with the speaker sizing.

like i said above len, if you can afford it some kappa componants like in my link, in the doors and pillar ( or like mooby did, replace the dash ones with the kapper tweeters) would sound mint.

the voices would sound all good with these though too!

though i am unsure whether these would have a crossover network with them, but there is ways round that!

what else do you have in your motor mooby?

If you have speakers in the doors then the speakers in the dash are only tweeters.
Once out you will see that despite the hole in the dash accepting 10cm speakers, they are only tweeters which are about 1 inch big mounted in a 10cm plastic pod.

If you put full range 10cm speakers in the dash and connect to the existing wires they will still only produce treble as the factory crossovers will only send high end frequencies to them.

My point is, weather you put tweeters or normal speakers in, they will sound the same as they are still only receiving the same high end signal from the crossover, so dont bother, just put tweeters in.

A way round this is to amp either the dash speakers (with new cable) or door speakers, you will then be running a 4 speaker system up front plus your rears but you will loose the tweeters.

Personally I wouldnt bother, just stick to ugprading the door speakers and dash tweeters in the original locations, once amped up you would have all the vocal response you could possibly want, add a sub for bass and it will sound spot on.

yeah i thought this might happen but it doesnt ( i checked first!) as the factory crossover isnt as early in the wiring as you think. There are 4 wires going into the tweeter, two for power in and two wires go off to the door speakers. Just before the tweeter where there is a capacitor. use the two that go to the door speakers if you are going to amp the door speakers anyway or use the tweeter ones before they get to the crossover (capacitor) either way would work. ive just cut the tweeter ones, its all good.

Nickyb - You obviously didnt read what I said.

The new 10cm speakers in the dash will be full range speakers and I will rewire them to recieve the H/U front channel direct. I will then amp the speakers in the doors. (using the front channel of the 3 RCA's)
The original wiring and crossovers will be redundant.

Len, save yourself the hastle! i did, the tweeter signal isnt sorted until it gets right into the tweeter pod bit! take it out and you will be able see a red capacitor about half the size of an AAA battery ( an alarm remote size!) that is soldiered onto the wiring into the tweeter, that wire with capacitor in line will be the + wire on each side of the car. the ones that go down to the doors, but check anyway, ( as im sure you will!! lol! ) are just connect at the tweeter, before the capacitor. The wiring allready there will be plenty good enough, if you want to re do it all go ahead but I could see it being quiet a mission to do, so i didnt!

Thanks for that, makes it far easier.
been looking at speakers and i hope they will fit! Its the fixings that may cause problems as they stick out. So hope I can still get the standard mesh back on!

yeah you will need to watch that, mine are pretty flat and its a squeeze and takes some tiny turning and messing around with the position of the speaker to get it so the mesh clips will clip back in without getting caught on the edges of the speaker, where the screws would go like.

mine are like these :

http://images.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=http://www.comparestoreprices.co.uk/images/so/sony-xs-f1031-10cm-speaker.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.comparestoreprices.co.uk/car-accessories/sony-xs-f1031-10cm-speaker.asp&h=200&w=200&sz=30&hl=en&start=3&tbnid=rfgd9_X6nNTaIM:&tbnh=104&tbnw=104&prev=/images%3Fq%3D10%2Bcm%2Bspeakers%26gbv%3D2%26svnum%3D10%26hl%3Den%26client%3Dfirefox-a%26channel%3Ds%26rls%3Dorg.mozilla:en-US:official%26sa%3DG

and they fit, if they were similar to these though:

http://www.fredgehog.com/images/Small%20waterproof%20pair.JPG

they wouldnt fit , the screwholes need to stick out, if that makes sense.

Up until the signal reaches the tweeter its the full frequency (as that is where the signal is split and sent to the door speakers, on the connector for the tweeter). on the tweeter there is a small capacitor filtering out the LF's, by removing that tweeter your removing the capacitor, so the replacment speaker would produce the whole frequency range(well not the whole range, but as much of it as the speaker physically could).

Oh wait, never saw the second page, lol nevermind then

How do people

right just a quick one regarding the front door speakers on a mk 3

my belovid Focals will no way fit, which is a hugh shame as they are absolutly awesome, alls not lost tho as they can go in my other car.

i have been given some brand new, jbl gto 603 mk 2 which are the correct size and fit perfect but the standard grill wont fit over them and i didnt get any grills with the jbl's either (hence why they only cost me £10)
i want the OG look anyhow..

im sure iv seen some mk 3 with deeper standard grills or am i dreaming???

any ideas anyone?
