Title: Legal
Post by: Fielder5757 on 02 February 2004, 13:40
I was looking at my car today and wondering to my self. Is it legal for me to shave off the side indicators that sit on my front 1/4 pannels?

AFAIK, the side repeaters are only a useful addition but not an MOT requirement. There are cars out there that never had side repeaters.

Hmmmm, interesting question. Strictly speaking I think you'll find you should have them if your vehicle is post 1st April 1986.
Check the section here about vehicles used on or after April 1st 1986:-

To be honest, I don't know how many MOT stations would actually pick that up. Sounds like a few here may have a got away with it.........

I take my car to this little shoddy garage in the middle of nowhere, the blokes about 60 and waers thick milkbottle glasses! He probabily thinks my black badges are really smoked side repeaters. My car has past there for the last 2 years and has never had a rear foglight.  ;D

Had a friend have his golf fail MOT because there were no side repeaters, he told them it was an import (obvious really, it was RHD) so didnt have them, he was then told that due to its age, side repeaters are a legal requirement (think it was an '86)

Rich is correct, side repeaters must be fitted on vehicles used on or after April fools day 1986. Wonder why the dot picked that day ::).

Would that still apply if you have say an imported golf like a rallye?

I know on imported cars that have been uk registered you have to have a foglight on the offside and have the correct beam pattern on your lights to get an MOT.

Its just I've seen a few rallyes and they don't have them.

Be the first mk2 with repeaters on the wing mirrors....will look cool

looks like when designing the mk2, the Germanz, look like they forgot about repeaters, realised this then just stuck some big phat square plastic thing on the wing. Would have been nice if there was a little recess and the repeater sat within it so it looked like thought went into it instead of just looking like an add on.   >:(
