HOWDY Ciaran
Could be a couple of things as I did have this problem. When you tightened or changed your cam belt did you change the 'Pre-Tensioner'?? Its only about a ?10 but this usually sqeals if its not changed.....another thing but is not connected to the cam belt is a wheel bearing.
cheers Manesh

no replaced nowt and its not a wheel bearing as it makes the wine even sitting neutral reving it.
im not sure if it made the noise b4 i tightened the belt or if i only noticed it after i had tightened it cos i listened!

get somebody to rev the engine while you pinpoint the noise under the bonnet

I assume by tightening the fan belt, you mean the water pump/alternator V belt.
That being the case it could be your alternator bearings. Try removing the V belt and running your engine (NOT FOR TOO LONG THOUGH AS YOU WON'T HAVE A WATER PUMP CIRCULATING THE COOLANT) and see if the noise is still there.
If the noise goes then you may get away with slackening the V belt a little, as Veedubgti8v has suggested.
If it turns out your alternator bearings are knackered, they are replaceable.
If the noise is still there then it is as m4nesh suggests, your timing belt tensioner.

Rich has hit the nail on the head. tightening the belt has probably shown up wear in either your alternator bearings or water pump.
The old belt never made the noise appear as it was stretched and as such wasn't running at the correct tension..
Also you say that you tightenend the fan belt, sometimes if the belt is worn it will rub on the pulley and the pulley amplifies the noise.
Like veedub said check the tension and if nessecary loosen it very slightly.

it is the same belt that was on but had to hand tighten it cos the gearing thing on the altanator is knackered!
