Title: Secret oil temp indicator in climate control
Post by: wantmygti on 03 April 2007, 08:51
Hey guys - got a quick query for you which neither i nor the knowledgeable Sean can fathom out.

I think we all know that if you press Econ and Up on the CC buttons you get into the secret menu and by selecting menu 15 on the left hand dial, the right hand one shows oil temp.

Ok, on to the query... When I set off from work the oil temp rises steadily to around 80 degrees. Steady driving on dual carriageway and single lane roads for about half an hour. Seems very reasoanble.

Car then sits at work from 08.15 to 17.15.

Upon setting off from work, the oil temp gauge always reads 95 degrees and tends not to drop off much in the half hour ride home. Now I know oil holds the heat longer than water, and that the engine gets hotter once it's shut off due to the lack of airflow and coolant flow. But I don't believe the oil is 95 degrees hot after a whole day of sitting.

The car is dark blue and the days are warmer now but i don't believe the sun will have any warming affect on the contents of the sump. I've tried leaving the program running when i turn the car off, and I've tried closing it first. No difference.

I can only think that this code reads the highest oil temp in a period of time. But I have seen it rise and fall by a few degrees during use?!?

Maybe some of you lot would be so kind as to repeat something simialr to the above scenario and see what happens??

Thanks in advance.

My missus old MK3 GTi had an oil temp gauge, and that never rose a degree when left standing, it didn't start to read below 50 degrees C and average running temp was about 84 degrees C.

I suppose the GTi might get higher temp oil, if an oil circulation pump kept running to provide the turbo some cooling effect, for a short time after switching the engine off.

Even if it did have said pump, the effects wouldn't last a day! And it would cool down once you're driving again??

I think it's not that true either, Mine actually changes if you move to another setting!?!? Not sure it's 100% reliable but I still look at it none the less

I'm not avoiding this one, but at the moment, the stealer has had the GTI for about three weeks now, to do some warranty work.

When I get it back, I'll do some more playing around with it.

What makes you say that, Phil ???

There is a big list of probs, many of which stem from the original supplying stealer (incompetent bunch of lieing wayne kerrs).  The two big issues are the boot filling up with water, and the battery going completely flat after 36 hours.

Old post I know, but on the menu 19.4 it is apparently oil presssure.

I tried this today and it seems correct but does any one know what scale/values the numbers displayed are, ie KPA or something x10 or x100  :undecided:

Oh and my car sits between 80-85 for oil temp
