I'm confused.
I have an oak green, J-reg, 16 valve, run-out Golf GTI. I thought they are supposed to have 15" BBS wheels, but mine has 14" ones. Was there a choice in wheel size? And if not, why would someone change them to smaller wheels?
-
They would be the correct wheels on it @ the mo,
-
eh? 15's were standard! especially on run out editions!
-
The run out editions should have the BBS wheels as fitted to veedubgtii's and my car.
Besides yours is a 16V not an 8V and so it should have the 15 inch BBS as standard.
If you have a set of 14 inch BBS wheels on your car then that is wrong as the standard fit BBS were 15 inch.
Go out and have a look when you can for the part number off the wheels as I think that will help to find what wheels you have got.
-
The no. on the wheels is 16\J14\H2. Does that shed any light on where they could have come from?
-
If the wheels are the same style as the ones in my pic you will have a part number printed near the centre cap. between the bolt spaces.
Ie the ones on mine are 191 601 025
lock for the same series of numbers, then when you got it let me know and i'll look up the wheels on my ETKA to see what model they come from.

Its not the size of the wave its the motion of the ocean.
-
Precisely.
-
oh yes, sounds to me like someone has sold the original ones on,
Time for an ebay feast.
-
if it had 14's on it then would there not be caliper clearance issues with the 256mm front brake setup?
i thought u needed 15's at least to clear the calipers
-
OK, the wheels are like the ones in your picture and I found 2 different no.s in the area you said to look.
192ET33 and KBA40589
The brakes fit fine.
-
just read the size of the tyres on the wheels
they'll ether most likely say 185/55r15 or 195/50r15
the r15 relates to the rim size, 15 being 15inch
-
The size of the tyre is 185/60/14
-
then for some bizarre reason you have 14 inchers on yours
ill check n see can you run the 256mm brakes on 14's, i was always under the impression u needed 15's because of clearance issues
you might have a set of 8v 239mm brakes on it
-
u can run 256mm under 14's
its the 280mm u need 15's for
must look a bit weird though on wee 14's with the big bumpers etc
-
The geezer that owned the car before could have had some nicer wheels one which he funded by selling the 15' bbs's. He'll took the nice wheels off again and just banged on anything to sell it. I've done that before.
-
I checked the brakes and they are 256mm.
The wee 14 inchers DONT look weird at all. It took 6 months to notice they were wee.
-
It would appear that you haven't got original wheels on your car.
I searched that part number you listed on ETKA and its not finding it.
I just wanted to know out of interest as I have never heard of 14 inch BBS wheels being fitted on a V dub,
The only size I know of smaller than the 6J X 15 are the ones fitted to the polo G40 but these are 5.5 X 13.
I do remember a lot of the vauxhalls had BBS wheels as an option around this time and they would fit the same pcd as the golf so it might be an idea to pop in with your part number to see if they have them listed on the parts computer.
As long as nothing rubs and on 256mm brakes it wont as long as your not throwing the ET out then stick with them.
Be interesting if anyone knows where they're from, I know I am intrigued.
-
When i tried to get locking wheel nuts, the standard
V W ones where to short, in the end i got Mercedes
ones , which had a thread length of 40mm.
Even though they are 14' they still look good on the car.

i just found some one selling a 14' bbs which included the vw centre caps. He said it was from a small bumper '88 Gti. There was a pic but dont know how to insert them.
