just bought a n reg gti 8v
drove back home fine, trip of about 40 miles,
was getting about 39 to the gallon all ok.
parked it up now the bloody thing wont start.
it turns over but wont kick.
there is spark and fuel..
battery is good and full tank of petrol.
im at a total loss.
any ideas.
ive had the car 2 days and am begining to think it was a bad move
thanx in advance

immobiliser?
If you drove it, did you start it or the other owner?
-
I'd start by replacing the ECU temp sender, then the ECU & fuel pump relays :)
Also the coils on MK3s are prone to failure, and give a weak spark.
-
spark looks pretty good to be honest, so i dont think its the coil.
i have had someone say temp sensor.
gonna have to have a day on it sat.
realy need my car...
i started it, first turn of the key but needed my foot on the gas.
i know when i first took the car out on the first test drive it was a b!tch to get going.
it had been sat for a couple of weeks then moved off on on his drive way every day with a for sale notice in. thought it must have been choked up.
drove home great though lovely and smooth. no splutter nothing.
-
symptoms do point towards the ECU temp sensor, so I'd do that 1st :)
-
Exact same thing happened to me when I bought mine, turned out to be the temp sender. £28 later, all sorted!
-
was it just the sender or did you change anything else as well
-
oh well
a full day of head scratching and fustration later, bugger it
its off to the garage.
ive nearly put my foot in the door so many times today its untrue.
i cant realy afford it but its no good to me like this and i cant sell it..
viscious circle.

"was it just the sender or did you change anything else as well"
Just the sender was replaced, old one screws out, new one screws in, bob's your uncle.........!
-
i got in a mood with it.
shouldnt have but i think it was just the icing on a bad day.
-
found the problem
melted wire in the ignition circuit.
looks like its been bodged in the past.
was arcing out and had melted back.
new bit of wire later spot on.
its killed the rely though so i need a new one.
started it and it ran fine, little lumpy but fine.
needs all putting back together and giving a good blat to clear it out.

nice one
