Title: Test Drove a NEW CIVIC TYPE R + ED30 TODAY!!!
Post by: timp7748 on 26 March 2007, 16:23
Today I was very bored as I am on night shifts at work. My solution was to go out and test drive some cars. The first was the new Civic Type R. Looks absolutely stunning. However it feels cheap and the ride and engine are raw, not to mention the sh1te driving position.

The next was the Ed30. The purpose of my trip to VW was because I fancied trading my DSG for a manual. Only had it 2 months. Took a 56 reg Ed30 out. Manual with 4000 miles. Before the test drive I was negative about it due to the poor magazine reviews. Drove down the first stretch of dual carriageway and . WOW WHAT A CAR!!!!!

Believe me when I say this... Don't ever listen to magazine reviews. They are a watse of time. TopGear mag reckons the type R is best, followed by the Stock GTI. The Ed30 comes 4th or 5th. The Ed30 beats the new Type R in every area!!!! TRUST ME!!!!

No it is the same, but it is lighter.

Only + 4 BHP, it's now 201 @ 7800 rpm.

also has less torque too and the VTEC comes in a few rpm earlier.

Give me a Golf anyday

Please donate one MKV Golf GTI / Edition 30 to Rhys Picton, of Merthyr Tydfil    All donations warmfully received

Don't you have to be over 60 or something to drive a Honda?

My Mates just bought a 2.2 diesel Civic, I'm not a lover of that multi layered dash TBH.

"If you buy a Honda, it's still a Honda"

its weird what Honday have done; it's more expensive than the old model, only got 1BHP more and 3 lbs ft of torque less (figures from latest issue of EVO!)

The question is why would you?  Mind you if we were all the same we'd all be driving around in Golfs!  Or maybe Porsches, Aston Martins ......   Seriously, the only reason I could see would be cost.  But I think I'd have to rob a bank or something and get the Golf.

I must admit, I like the Honda........Oh my god.......Nooooo....must..resist....aging process......

Ahh, that's better. No seriously, the looks are quite "different" but I think it's design will age badly.

The golf has been more of an evolution of the form, rather than a step difference and it's better resolved as a result.

Standard disclaimer....IMO

What's wrong with your current DSG?
Title: Re: Test Drove a NEW CIVIC TYPE R + ED30 TODAY!!!
Post by: timp7748 on 26 March 2007, 22:37
I miss 'driving' the car. With the DSG you just wack it in drive and off you go. I am really missing the involvement of a manual. That Ed30 today was from another world. The way the turbo kicked in after 4000 rpm nearly snapped my neck. I would love to have the one I drove. Not sure about the tartan seats tho! Much rather have the full leather treatment or recaro buckets!!

The Type R was nice and looked a lot more individual compared to other cars on the road but I was really dissapointed with it. I prefer the old one to drive. The lack of torque was shocking and it's so bloody rev hungry!!! Fuel would cost you a fortune for the bugger!

Surely the turbo kicks in at lower rpm than that?

Or is that when you really feel thr car really starting to fly....
Title: Re: Test Drove a NEW CIVIC TYPE R + ED30 TODAY!!!
Post by: timp7748 on 27 March 2007, 20:38
Yeh it does kick in earlier but at 4000rpm... Hold on!!!

HULLY I'm not sure you can say that " dont you have to be over 60 to drive a Honda " ! Well I suppose you can say it but, being as you dont know the age of all of us others some of could be getting close to that mark AND be driving Gti's or ED 30's, age isnt an issue its what in your chest that matters mate  :smug: , however I haven't taken any offence at your remark just had a chuckle

You didn't tell us whether you'd be tempted by a Honda though

HURDY,  I took one out a couple of years ago had it for the whole day, MANIC  thats all there is to say, go's like bugger all the time there's no respite. Occasionally I like to just meander along, cant do that in Type R's they want to be off all the time, noisy on motorways too, gets you down. Having said all that, there has never been a failure with a VTec engine, thats a thought isn't it, years ago around 1982/3/4 I had 3 Accords ( family then) I had a 30p light bulb go in about 5 years of motoring, thats the good bit about Hondas mate . I dont like the lack of rear view in the new one , I did wait to have a butchers at the new one,I had MK V GTi then, which I changed for ED 30 which I have now, no regrets best all rounder at the moment in my opinion. Hurdy do you know anything about e-mails, mines gone to pot says " application configuration is incorrect" and wont let me in, damned inconvenient I have to say. Not an IT person though, so looking for some help and guidance if you know anyone ?

Sorry,  :embarassed:I'm ok on a PC for an amateur, but have never come across this before. I'm sure there'll be some forum out there that'll cover it.

I've been a passenger in the old ('04) type R and my mate was just always at the gearbox, looked too much like hard work to me....sh!t...sounding like an old geyser again  althouh I must admit the sound was superb at the top end...ahh...that's better...sounding much younger again

ED30 DEFINITELY knocks the CTR into touch though

there has never been a failure with a VTec engine,

Hmmm - I seriously doubt that!  There may have been no "publicised"  VTec failures, but you can be sure that as long as your botty has a ring, then engines fail, and that includes the Honda v-tec.

Actually, Honda are quite sly with their "publicity".  Just ask any motorcyclist about the new Honda Pan-European - two major faults with it, yet Honda deny any problems, so they don't publicise any problems!

hey to be honest i think hondas are pretty good, they are very reliable, and true the new CTR's are VERY refined BUT if u modify it a little, cams, breathing etc - they do sound nice and also go pretty well. The seating position is fine and if u do want something not so refined u should try driving one of the old Eg or Ek B series Hondas, they are awsome - as i have 1 lol

from a 1.6 the b16 pushes 167 bhp, thats pretty damn good with no turbo (and if u add a turbo - best of both worlds!) - 0-60 in around 7.3 which i think is faster than a 1.8 GTI turbo golf if im not mistaken!!

turbo b16s are a waste of time. there's a reason the main tuning companies like mugen/spoon don't make turbo kits for them.

you'd spent a lot of money n/a tuning, but just as a gti deserves a remap, EP type Rs deseve a supercharger.

the new CTR is not a true type R imo, bling bling wheels shouldn't be what its about. DC2 ITR all the way.
Title: Re: Test Drove a NEW CIVIC TYPE R + ED30 TODAY!!!
Post by: jameal eg6 on 08 April 2007, 16:09
Sharpie - i also agree with u abut the new CTR, i am personally going to get a JDM DC2 ITR next - its a very good car, and i would like to say that the ek9 is a very very good Type R - and the only CTR i would get if i was to get one. As for Turbo's u r right, but also with the right tuning u can get major boost and reliability with B series engines, it will also give u more value for money in the long run instead of tuning NA, as u can get more power out of boost. its a good engines to start tuning on if u r serious. Although having said this i have senn some very Mean powered NA civics that have awsome response and power! B20 Vtec conversion for starters is very popular to bring the displacement to 2 litres.

Phil Mcavity - i was only posting my opinion, and ur talking about a MK5 GTI!!!, my car is a 1992 - J reg that is pretty damn quick and is still going strong, and only has a 1.6 lump! oh and reliability is well in there aswell with the B Series engines.

no harm in talking about other cars - i think a lot of members on this forum have their "vw blinkers" on. i realise it strayed a little from topic, but the title is CTR & ED30.

Just to be pedantic

The title is NEW CIVIC TYPE R + ED30. and not older  models.

If Jameal had some experience of modding the NEW CTR then maybe....just maybe it would have passed un-noticed on the thread.

Nevermind ..back on topic....ED30 gets better day by day as the miles rack up. Im sure the NEW CTR is good but - for me - it's not in the same league.

And I am unashamedly biased toward the ED30 obviously

I've just gone through the test driving phase until I got my Ed.30 last week.

I drove all sorts... including both of these mentioned.

How What Car can rank a Civic Type R above a GTI proves its articles are driven by advertising budget rather than real fact.

The civic type R doesnt come with Aircon of any description (so thats extras)...
It doesnt come with switches that feel like they mean something when you click them
the dash is like its made from that cheap plastic that woolies make cheap toys from...

Oh... and a mate of mine who actually bought one, is trading after a couple of months because it has near enough no grip in the wet. ( like we get sunny days in the UK all the time).

I also tried a Mini Cooper S, which is a licence looser if ever I saw one. Torque steering monster which I found it impossible to keep under 30 (and I hated the speedo and the stupid BMW indicator switches).

What can I say... VW simply rocks with the GTI / GTI Ed.30.

is this a crass overstatement...

Are all Japanese cars plastic wagons?

I've learned my lessons over the years....

- A jordan Honda Civic... Plastic ( but fetching in yellow!)
- A brainfart Rav4 ( which was loathsome but had to make some attempt in the family car stakes)... Quickly replaced with a german car.

Saying that the Mini I test drove was also, awfully tacky plastic.
