Hello Boys and girls! (respectively) How we all doing this evening?!?!?!?
Allow me to pose a problem to you all, I am 19 (20 next month) I've been obsessed with Volkswagens all my life, My mum is a hardcore bugger and im a golf man! Ive just completed my apprencticeship as a mechanic with VW! Oddly enough, My Previous car list are as follows
Vauxhall Chevette
Nissan Micra k10
Ford Fiesta (blew up obviously!)
Vauxhall Corsa
And my current vehicle
Citroen Saxo VTR (boyracer alert!!!)
Now i've finally decided to go DUB, the only car i can really see myself in is a MK2 GTi (dont think i could afford a MK1)
so can anyone help me out with some advice? I've asked people already who have more experience of older dubs (all i ever got to work on were mk3's onwards) and have been told i should go for an 8V mk2 as these are more reliable, torquier and dont rev as much for your power.
I want an immaculate standard one with as little miles as possible.
I'm just wondering, with roughly £2500 to spend, does this sound reasonable and if any of them are high miles, is there anything to look out for etc etc? It seems increasingly difficult to find some under 100k.
Or should i consider drivers also?

A driver would be much cheaper to insure! Go for a 1.8 Driver if you want a bit of poke. For 2.5k you'll have plently of change! Otherwise you'll get a mint gti, with full service history for your money - dont go for modded - standard is best. Saw a K reg mk2 on ebay a while back.Yum

ye a 1.8 driver or even a 1.6 would be a nice run around..
depends what you want it for ....

Well i know drivers are ok and all but i rly want my first dub to be perfect, if i see an immaculate driver i would take it though. does anyone know what insurance would be like on a gti? Groups etc

would really prefer a GTi, would like a mix of power and looks. but the deciding factor would be insurance.
Standard would really be the only route for me, perhaos some shiny wheels, schmidts, ronals etc and maybe lowering, but the more standard the better, cant stand motora with stick on plastic :cry:

2.5k for a mk2 is decent money.
insurance isnt too bad. you need the right links for a good quote :wink:

at 19 on a valver you are looking at about £1300 TPFT. Just a benchmark for you.

mk2 GTI 8v = group 14
mk2 GTI 16v = group 15
this is according to Parkers
i find my 8v GTI incredibly easy to drive because you have bags of torque at mid revs, no need to thrash it!
Mileage wise, mine has done 219k miles (dont worry about high milers, providing theyve been looked after) and starts first time very time, doesnt overheat, etc etc :)

Yep 16v. For 2.5k you will get a good one, should be able to get sub 100k and good history for that.
You could get an 8v if insurance is an issue but on that budget i wouldn't bother with a driver.
Another thought would be look for something closer to £1500 and spend the other grand on wheels and bits, theres plenty of info on here about desirable mods.
Either way ask for advice when you find one as there are some really overpriced examples out there and wouldn't want you to get caught out.

Well i think i'd prever an 8valve to be honest, I've heard they are better!
if i bought a golf for 1500 would it be as reliable etc? ui'd ideally like an immaculate example so i could keep it in that condition if you know what i mean?

I think with a car this old there is no guarantee of reliability whatever the cost (excepting if a full full rebuild has been done of course).
£1500 will get you a good example but you will need to keep putting money in to maintain it. Mine is due some respraying and new wheels right now lol!
My 8v was a similar price to what you are looking at. To give you an idea in 2 years i have done some wheel bearings, bushes, suspension once, brake disks, pads, brake pipes, tyres, a CV joint, temp sensor, coil and i think thats it! I do have some seriously harsh roads round here though which does account for some wear. I am reckoning about £400 a year on repairs roughly.
Anyway i have rambled on enough!! :smiley:
