Title: what should i do??
Post by: Mr Lees on 15 March 2007, 07:53
Option 1: red 5dr 06 gti UK with 7k miles no options as far as i can tell £17450

or order edition 30 5 dr black brand new uk (pre-reg?) with xenon, ipod, parking, multifunction wheel, tinted rear windows for £22995

big difference in price, big difference in cars?

can you retro fit option to GTI i.e take to dealers and get to fit parking sensors, ipod prep ect

thanks!

Weigh up your options and what YOU really want from the car

Option 1 saves you 5.5K but gives you a 1 year old car with7k miles on that someone else may have ragged senseless and has no options fitted

Option 2 costs you more, but you get a brand new car, with options, that no-one else has thrashed, with more power and that is a ltd edition model. Come resale time it should be easier to sell and be worth approx 1.5k over a similarly specced std gti. This is my option as I have ordered and ED 30.

There is also a 3rd option of buying a new GTI (either specced up or basic) which in basic format wouldn't cost you too much more than option 1.

At the end of the day you pays your money and takes your chance in whatever option you decide

Whichever option you do decide on I'm sure you will not be disappointed

PS with the 5.5k you save on option 1 you could buy an awesome spec MK1 or MK2 golf GTI

Option 2 for sure doesn't include VAT either, because I have almost the same spec as you and 22900ish is my pre VAT price.

I would still do option 2 though.

Dont be fooled by resale values Goap, since when has ANY CAR with slightly more horsepower been worth more when dealer gets out his glasses guide. It will be the same as STANDARD gti, It will be the same value as a good spec'd standard golf with leather and 18's monza's on and some fancy stitching here and there. Thats what you should be comparing and remember your paying 2 grand more so it works out the same depressiation as standard GTi  because its 2 grand cheaper!!. THEY BOTH HAVE 52%RETAINED RESALE AFTER 3 YEARS.

I think you've hit the nail on the head. Didn't want to say nothing tho as it may piss lots of people off. I also hear from countless reviews that the standard gti is better too. (NOT MY OPINION BY THE WAY AS I HAVEN'T DRIVEN ONE!!)

Personally I would look at some others. Go onto volkswagen's website and search around your area. A standard model won't sell as well cos people like the extras. The black Ed30 will be a b!tch to keep clean and will show every little scratch. It will drive you crazy and probably make you sick after spending £23k on a car! (Again no offense to black car owners. They look nice but lets be honest, they are hard work!)

Pearl Black Ed30.....mmmm I love mine! and yeah, I've had to clean it this week cause it was a week old and had a few rain marks on it (if you looked close)

Oh how I hated cleaning my new car and thinking "it's all mine" and "soon, once she's run in a little I'll be able to overtake those standard GTi's......"

Then I started thinking how much more it will be worth in years to come......

COME OFF IT GUYS!!!!! This ED30 / GTI stuff is becoming a joke!

Go with your heart and buy whatever you like. If you likes the ED30, buy it, if not DON'T

agreed simonet, afterall its difficult to improve a MK 5 GTi as it is pretty dam good car before the Edition 30 tweeks.

To me if im buying a BRAND NEW motor, its always gonna feel that extra bit special, every standard GTi has different performance, some faster then others although the same BHP, especially one thats done a fair few miles, so"blasting past a "STANDARD GTi" is not guarantee'd!!! Well id put up a good fight !!!!

We are all here for a reason cus we love our Golf GTi's so much.    End of.

OK I think im going to order a new uk one tornado red with all the above options from motorprovider import but still get  2 years warranty and first owner with leather for 21k on the road.
The ed 30 is great but im not really one for outright performance as such I had a type r , that was very quick (and black. pain to wash!) but the ride was awful so i got rid
I know imports are worth less trade in but ive saved 5K+ on UK and I will keep the car for a long time.

thanks for all your opinions, where is my cheque book!

I am sure this doesn't apply now, but just check the Motorpoint car has full climate control as when I looked last year, they had a number of EU import GTi's with the basic A/c

Good choice (did you go for DSG?). You shouldn't have any problems with motorprovider (note not motorpoint).  Make sure you register the car with VW UK when you get it (send them a copy of the reg doc and data sticker) if motorprovider don't and make sure you get English manuals (had to wait a while for mine).  I'd check your saving though - I suspect it's closer to 3K, not 5+! (sizeable none the less).

Most of all though - enjoy it!

Im going for a manual, I have nothing against DSG, but when I test drove one I couldnt get along with it, although  do a lot of motorway miles, so maybe something to think about!

It will be the same value as a good spec'd standard golf with leather and 18's monza's on and some fancy stitching here and there.

I wish people would stop saying the only difference is the wheels and half leather with fancy stitching.  It has 30 extra BHP (which isn't much) - but if you look on mybluefin.co.uk and fill out the dropdowns with the Ed30, you'll realise that it has a different turbo and is capable of almost 290BHP with a simple upgrade.  The standard GTI can only get about 240BHP with the same upgrade.

I wish everyone would stop the whole GTI v GTI Ed30 war!  It seems that many people who have standard GTI's are slating the Ed30 saying its a waste of money because you're not getting much for the £1715 extra.

Personally I chose the Ed30 for a few reasons...  I dont really like the half painted rear bumper on the standard GTI, I prefer the Ed30 wheels, and I liked the heated seats.  I drove the standard GTI and the Ed30, and to be honest there was very little difference in performance.  It seemed slightly quicker, but not really noticable (although the Ed30 had 150 miles on the clock and the GTI had over 4000).  To me those reasons were enough to justify the extra £1715, but I can see how others think they're not.

Mr Lees... I'm sure you'll be happy with your choice no matter what.  Personally I think a sportscar should have a manual box as its more fun, but then again thats something that half the forum (those with DSG) will argue against!  I can see DSG having its advantages, and more cars are heading to the automatic style as an option asthe years go by.  It seems no matter what the discussion is that someone will always argue!  At least we all have the love of MK5 Golfs in common

Com on Phil, youve had a bee in your bonnet about the ED30 for months.
We all like Golf GTIs and both versions are very good.  Just enjoy the cars and leave it at that please.

TagnuT - Agree totally.

Paul - It is to wind people up like you that keep harping on about the ED30 not being good. Remember I am still currently a proud Gti owner myself and love it.  Everyone is entitled to their oponions but going on and on constantly about it is very boring.

We all know how you feel about the ED30 so you dont need to keep telling us.

Everyone likes different things and just as well or the world would be a boring place.

Type of Gti and spec is a totally personal choice and preference and no one should be slagged off for their choice....

Tagnut, i dont have a problem, if you read the previous thread, im not the one doing the stirring here, its remarks like "jelous" from deejay.
like the thread was asking "what should i do", i was answering his question !!!!!, im gettin pissed off for being singled out, ok im not keen as much as id like to be over the edition 30, cus i generally think its not full value for money, its not an improvement on the 1st car, and that is FACT, all buyers of the edition 30 are always gonna be on my case cus they think it is, but as in all tv documentrys, mags, reviews,it isnt and thats FACT.
We are all allowed to share our opinions on this, hense why we have forums of discussion. If people dont like my opinion then its HARD LUCK.
Mr lees had  a decision to decide what to go for, about resale values, and ive stated FACT that the edition 30 is and will be the SAME RESALE VALUE AT 52%., sorry to piss you off thinking that your new edition 30 will fetch more on resale but you will only get the extra back that you outlayed in the first place. it wont fetch more cus of the "exclusivity" factor

Phil
Does the mark 4 anniversary hold its value better? According to my dealer they can sell them at £1500 to £2000 over book because of their rarity and collectability? Do you not think this is the case for the ED30? The ED30 is the most powerful production Gti of all time and is a 'special edition' of what is considered to be the best Golf of all time. I would even go to say that the current Gti is one of the best cars of recent time. My Gti cost nearly 24K new with the options and I am struggling to get 16K 2 years later. That is strong depreciation. My new ED30 is costing around 23K new. do you think I will struggle to sell it for 16K in 2 years if I chose to? I dont think it will depreciate anywhere near as much.

As I said before its all down to individual choice as was your advice to Mr Lees. He made his descision based on what HE wanted after taking everyones opinion on board. I think we should agree to dis-agree on if the ED30 is worth the extra money and leave it at that. No hard feelings......

ok' s deejay, truce it is. we will agree to disagree. case closed !
           yay!
BTW,  mk 4 special edition was also 2 grand more then standard car was, EXACTLY my whole point, 2 grand more for ed 30, and thats why you would expect 2 grand more back on yours in a couple of years. hense the normal GTi with more extras would fetch better then standard one on resale, the dealer would say it doesnt but as we all know, private sales you get a better sale price.

no hard feelings either deejay

ok , thought I would check with the guy supplying the ED30 with xenons, ipod, parking and multifunction wheel that the price of £22995 on the road didnt include VAT,,, It does! UK car with full 3 year warranty.
puts a different spin on it , also if i go for candy white/ red it will be - £350!

So its not just me who noticed that fact?  I wonder why most of Phil's posts are in Edition 30 related threads when he doesn't like it?  :undecided:  I've had a standard GTI and it was fantastic as is the new Edition 30.  As far as I am concerned, anything with a VW badge rocks.  If you don't like the Edition 30 / GTI or whatever,  thats fine but it when it is repeated it starts sounding like a broken record.

Sounds like a bargain to me!  My steel grey order is £23390 and thats only with xenons, armrest, tinted rear and highline computer.  The dealer knocked off the £350 paint charge for NTI.  It all depends on which wheels you like best, whether you like the fully painted bumpers, half leather seats etc - basically whether you think the extra £1715 on the Ed30 is worth it over the original.
The main bonus with the Ed30 is that if you want more power later down the line, a simple bluefin ECU remap (which you do yourself at home!) can upgrade you to 290bhp for a mere £600 as the Ed30 has the Audi S3's turbo unit in it.
No matter what type of new car you buy it will have lost about 10% of its value as soon as you drive it off the forecourt... although having said that 2nd hand Ed30's with 20 - 5000 miles are currently selling for MORE than the retail price due to the waiting times on new ones!
I'm sure no matter which way you go (new Ed30 or 2nd hand GTI) you'll be happy!
