Title: BAD STARTING - SOMETIMES
Post by: Richard Savage on 14 March 2007, 23:34
1993 [1992 Model] Mk I Volkswagen Golf GTI 1.8 [Karmann] Sportline Cabriolet Convertible

The problem has become increasingly worse, over some while!

I've checked obvious things like, condensation in the distributor head, visual check of rotor arm / distributor head, condition of leads, security of connections .............

Local VW agent has run a diagnostics.  Nothing!

If the vehicle is used daily, it isn't toooooooooo much of a problem.  It USUALLY starts, runs, idles and throttles up, pretty much immediately or maybe a LITTLE hesitantly.

If it is not used for maybe two or three days, it is generally a .............. pig.

It is very much like trying to start a carburettor'd engine without using choke or a  carburettor'd engine with a faulty automatic choke.

It cranks over fine, but, it doesn't fire, it fires, doesn't fire, fires, stutters, doesn't fire, fires, doesn't fire, thinks about it, coughs a bit, runs for a short while, doesn't fire, fires, changes it's mind, fires ..................

Once it's made up it's mind and 'catches', the throttle pedal can be dropped back immediately and it will idle fine, if a little fast maybe, and will throttle up no problem.  Once it's up an running it goes like a train.

I need to get this sorted 'cause it belongs to 'er in doors and while it's a problem she insists on using my 911.  Oh no, no, no, that won't do!

Sounds like you might have leaky injectors, you can buy a set of brass mercedes ones for £50 though!

Easy thing to try is disconnect the WUR & 5th injector, see if that makes any difference.

Before you buy you need to check the part numbers of the old injectors though, the later ones have a fine thread which is different to the merc ones.  a quick test you can to is pull all 4 injectors and leave them in a jar, see if any fuel drips out.

This is a comon problem and not many people check this but if you take the dizzy cap off and scrap the contacts inside with a screw driver there is a layer of white crap that builds up on them which reduces its performance best to rub it with a bit of sand paper every now and then to keep the contact clean.
Hope this is a little tip for people.
