I've seen a couple of VW Golfs around with these odd looking things on the front of the bonnet, looking through the mags they get no mentions but i see some cars also in the mags with them on.. I found a mention of one car having a 'car bra' on it..
Can anybody shed some light on these? what ARE they? what do they do?
Many thanks!

i think they are a cover to that goes over the front of the bonnet to protect the car from rocks, road salt, insects, tar etc. some are made out of VW Vinyl-artificial leather.

Is there a technical name for them? or are they simply car bra's?

Yep they are called bonnet bra's. You can get them from www.autobra.co.uk
You need to keep an eye on them though as they can rub and ruin your paint !!!!!!!!!
