hi im sorry if this is a repost or anything..which i think it is but when i search the forum it either comes up with tha connection failed page or doesnt do anything.
Basically i have a 1.4cl k Reg Mk3 golf. I dont know the engine code but it is the same as the mk2's with the round air filter rather than the paenl filter. (excuse my technical terminology)
Since i filled up with dodgey petrol frm tescos during the contamination my car has had seriously high fuel consumption. I filled up £20 and only just got 80miles out of it. I have looked for leaks under the car and can see nothing. Also i have checked the breather pipes coming out from the throttle body i think it is..and they all seem fine to me.
Im not too good under the engine so if anyone has had the same problems or knows the solution please could you offer your knowldge. it would be much appreciated.
Also my car is leaking oil from the head gasket area but i dont think this has anything to do with it as it has been doing so for a long time.
Please any help would be much appreciated as petrol is costing me a bomb at the moment

got same problem but mines on a Mk 3 GTI, been told it could be the lambda sensor ??
-
My dad's Primera suffered from this after filling up from our local Morrisons..I ended up changing the front 02 sensor (also known as the Lambda Sensor). This cured it.
Try using some Redex, and clean out the throttle area with Carb Cleaner...it might help..
-
Aye it will be the Lambda.
It will be coated with silicon contaminant and reading weak so the ecu is overfuelling. You can try to clean it with petrol and a soft paintbrush or buy a new one. It'll be cheaper in the long run.
-
the first thing you should replace if the car is over-fueling is the ECU temp sender, then the lambda :)
Don't buy cheap no-name lambdas either, I got one off ebay and it lasted 2 weeks. Then bought a bosch universal one for £50 and its been fine ever since :)

thanks for all the help guys..but 2day for sum reason the car is not starting...got to call the AA and see what they say i cant b botherd 2 mess about in the dark...if it is a big problem i think im going to have to sell up and count my losses..cars causing too much hassell...but i will defo try the lambda sensor if it dus start running again.

called the AA this evening..and the problem iss that my car is trying to pump soo much petrol it is flooding my plugs with petrol.. never even knew this was possible
-
this can happen if you have a blown ECU, or if the blue temp sender is giving the ECU a false reading. If you turn the key 1 click the pump should prime then shut off. If it runs constantly then you have a blown ECU!
-
replaced the spark plugs and the problem seems to have stopped..doesnt mis fire anymore either...hopefully this will be the end of my troubles

could you go into this a bit more? do you mean when you turn the key 1 click(electrics turn on) the fuel gauge should go up then down?
-
On MK2s with an electric fuel pump (i.e. GTIs), when you switch the ignition on the fuel pump should be heard to run for a few seconds, then stop, to 'prime' the system :)
This wont affect the fuel guage, its slow to come up to the final reading after you first switch the car on anyway.
If yours goes up then down it might suggest you have an earthing problem at the in tank lift pump/level sender plug or next to the fusebox :)
