i had a puncture on the way to work this morning . I took the wheel off and there is a screw almost dead centre in the middle of the tread. The tyre is a fairly new Pirelli P5000 and i reckon i could probably have it repaired. Anyone had this done before? is it worth it cost wise? and most importantly as i often have my children in the car is it 100% safe?
Cheers

Most tyre places will be able to repair that by the sounds of it Martin.
They basically drill a hole in the tyre where the screw was. Then fit a repair patch that has a stalk of rubber on it through the hole from the inside of the tyre and glue it into place.
I haven't had one done for absolutely years and it was under £10 then.
As for safety, I wouldn't think this service would be available unless it was proven to be safe.
At the end of the day it's what you feel happiest about where your family is concerned.

Cheers Toby, i just wanted to know how it worked really but that sounds fine. Will prob just get it repaired and keep it as my spare then!

These are fine as long as they are in the tread of the tyre and quite safe.
No use if its in the sidewall and no tyre place should do that kind of repair.

Sidewall should be ok. Parked last night and it was fine, this morning it was flat. I only moved it off the drive while flat so i had enough room to chuck the spare on. Just text a pic to a mate who works for ATS of the screw in it, he reckons repairable, cost £18.96 but still better than a new tyre!

18 quid? Some mate he is ! Saturday rates at ATS = fiver for a repair round these parts.

Ive had this
I put the whole wheel with tyre in a big barrel filled with water so i could see where the leak was coming from (thought it was a split rim bolt leak)
Glad it was the tyre and was about £7 quid to sort

£18 ! That is steep, I'd have said about £7 or £8. They should be safe to repair if done properly and there was one on a set of wheels I bought once and I had no problems with it. They can repair the face of the tyre but they should always refuse to repair a sidewall.
