Title: mayo in breather???
Post by: rowlers on 12 March 2007, 19:26
just discovered a load of mayo in the oil breather where it plugs in the air box - do I need to be worried???

Oil looks OK, and no oil in water.

set my mind at ease!

any on the cap? you may get some anyways from condensation but from the sounds of it you got abit more than that, might be worth having the compression checked or the water sniffed for signs of head gasket.

nowt on the cap, no signs at all in the oil, water looks fine too - will have a sniff of the water in the morning!

I shouldn't worry mate, I used to wash the custard out of the breather pipe on my valver every couple of months and that was fine. I think its because the oil vapour gets mixed with damp air and then condenses in the breather as its at the front of the engine bay and gets cooled by the air flow from the front of the car.

if you use it for short journeys then it will build up, just clean it out, and take it for a proper run using the rev range.

I go with the last reply. Pick a nice day for a drive, a sunny Sunday, clean out the crap and then go for a good long blast, preferably to a motor museum or car show. Put a couple of hundred miles on the clock and hopefully the rest of the condesation will just evaporate away with any stress you may have.

just had the breather pipr off and it is full of sh|t!!!
mayo and black gunge!
the pipe looks like is kn@ckered though, the wall is very thin engine side and has lots of cracks in it!!! its maybe drawing cool air throught the walls!

Anyone got a spare???

It's a common thing on the valver I'm trying to work out how to fit an oil catch tank to mine as that lot going back round the engine doesn't appeal to me too much. Rowlers the pipe is a fortune from VW I looked for one ages back just taped it up with self amalgamating tape and it's been alright ever since :)

never thought about that - I've got a roll lying about somewhere too!!!

thats ajob for tomorrow!!

I'm going to get a catch tank when I find a bargain - I ain't paying £40 for a alloy/steel tin!!!

The problem I'm having with a catch tank is getting the pipework to fit in Silicon but I'm on it!! once I crack it I might do an oil catch tank piping kit for valvers :D The amount I found when stripping down the engine must be choking the engines up and the power my airbox was about 3cm deep in oil!

going to stick one of them pan scourer things into the oil breather - as the original thingy has long gone.

How big does it need to be - a full scourer?? Or does it need to be cut down a bit??

Also what stops it going into the engine???

ta

PS new forum is way cool!!! well done that geezer!

serious? if it was me i'd buy one from german and swedish if vw was significantly expensive! sounds a bit too ghetto for me!
