Title: renualt 5z....
Post by: DazVR6 on 11 March 2007, 13:56
Had a traffic light grand prix last night with a r5 gt turbo...got ahead of him off the lights but as soon as i hit 5rpm in second i heard his turbo spool up and he shot up beside me as if just to show me what he had, then he floored it with me hiiting the redline and him still accelerating away although i did pass him in third getting ahead of him....

Now i know these things are pocket rockets and weigh as much as a feather but his engine must have been worked coz surely as standard r5 coudnt keep up with and outpace a mk3 16v?

Anyone know their standard power figures?

I found this - scary!

Renault 5 Turbo

Renault 5 Turbo
Manufacturer: Renault
Production: 1980–1984
Body Styles: MR coupé
Engines: 1397cc Cléon turbo
The Renault 5 Turbo or R5 Turbo was a high-performance coupé automobile produced by the French manufacturer Renault in the early 1980s. The car was designed for rallying, but was also sold in road-going guise.

The 5 Turbo featured a mid-mounted 1397cc Cléon turbocharged engine in a modified Renault 5 chassis. In standard form, the engine developed 160 hp (118 kW). Though it still resembled the standard Renault 5, and was badged a Renault 5, it had little technical similarity.

160 brake from a 1.4.....makes you cry eh? hang your head in shame lol

I spent time looking for a good R5 turbo, there just not around!
Although I f*cking hate french cars!
It was a classic and I would love to have a good one on my drive.
Big problems over heating though!

Well googled it and found out that the phase 1 was 115bhp with the phase 2 kickin out 120bhp, and both weighing in at less than 900kg and thats standard.....can be tuned upto 200bhp easily, all from a 1.4 8v .

Thinking about last night with the 3 of us in the car which added upto 40st and a full tank of petrol i wouldnt of rweally stood a chance

My mates got one, absolute minter full rebuild / respray etc, hes licenceless so would prob sell for the right price,

ITs a SCOOB KILLER

he sold is STI to buy it, Ajustable boost and at full boost its running 240 horses, arms like popeye just from trying to stop it torque steering,

All the plasic bits have a habit of falling off ... like all french cars .. lol

I love renault 5 turbo, a friend of a friend owns a renault turbo specialist garage in Ormskirk called Nocturnal (sp?) Developments. he has built some beasts before.

he tends to swap the 1.4 renault engine for a volvo 1.7 turbo engine, as originaly this engine was built by renault but was later bought by volvo so fits straight in. its all fuel injected so no more nasty carbs and runs a very reliable 200bhp all day long, thats at about 15psi.

The Renault 1.7 engine was in a renault 21 I had about 10 years ago. Good engine, big car but would do 110mph all day!
Yes Neaty ur dead right about Volvo buying it off Renault as I needed a new carb for it and got it from a Volvo breakers out of a 340!

I knew a few people who had r5gt's back in the day.  the bonnet had to be more vent than bonnet , they looked like cheese graters.

both were pushing the mental side of 180 hp.

The only car i've been in that gave me the fear more than either of them was a full race tuned 1430 mini , stripped to the bones with a straight through exhaust!  it must have weighed about as much as a wet fart and left you needing a physiotherapist every time you got out.

well either the renualt driver coouldnt drive or wasnt really playing.....

no way youd pass a standard one if it was being driven right, they are lightening quick in standard guise... let alone if you play with em.... yeah there prone to over heating... ive had a phase 2 and i blew, turbo, radiator, various hoses and more.... prob one of the most expensive cars ive had to spend on in a matter of months... good when going... but there a pain!!,

i deffo think we need some kinda vw vs the world day at santa pod.... so you know who your up against is playing... you may be suprised..... by your self, or your opponent!!

i wouldnt wanna race on ein me vr to 70mph (not if it had a good driver...) lol... very quick underrated cars... but also costly, very un reliable and well... if left alone there ok, but when people start doing things to em exterior wise there just

each car has its own cult following, the same as we are all here now

I had a shot (in 1983) of a mini cooper 1375 GT hillclimb sprint car. Damn  - it was a hairy arsed monster running twin del'orto 45 sidedraft's wi foam filters (rich mans DCOE 40's)  - and it could suck yer eyeballs into the back of yer head and rip the tyres off the 12" rims!

(kids under 25 wont even know what a del'orto 45 sidedraught is.....)

With carbs and no turbo (turbo's werent fitted to production cars except the 911 porker in '83 and some other exotic machinery) and it made about 130bhp and weighed in at 800 kilos. My RS2000 in 1984 (nearly new) only put out 109bhp standard. Then I got a Supermirafiori 131. That sounded awesome and left rubber for 100 yards from the pub car park (lol) Anyone on here even know what that is? (the 131 not the pub car park)....first twincam I ever owned and 2L of the best italian car a poor man could afford.
Ah the good / bad old days lol.

are you joking?!

I had a set of twin 40 weber, DCOE's for my driver.

I spend alot of time around Mark 2 escort rally cars, dont talk to me about side draft carbs! besides slide injection is were its at!

I grew up around bikes and old Mk1 and Mk2 escorts, not old enough to drive them though

Nuttiest car my eldest brother has was an RS turbo escort. He had it chipped, dropped etc. It would wheel spin in 3rd gear. Had it off the clock (needle buried) on the M1.
