Title: igntion barrel funny story and help needed - urgently
Post by: ANDY597 on 10 March 2007, 14:35
My mk2 8valve, went in for its Mot,  and apart from a dodgy wishbone bolt it came out the other end smiling happily at mr bank manager.

However, my wife picked it up from the Mot station and went shopping in it,  exiting the car jauntily and snapping the bloody key in my door.

She phoned and asked if I had a spare key,  which I said I did somewhere but not seen it since our house move.   After turning the entire house upside down, I eventually found the key (about an hour later) and phoned her back.  Only to discover that she had called my dad, who had promptly burst open the ingnition barrell and she was driving home courtesy of a plain screwdriver which was now my ignition key.

Now,  heres the bit that I need help with,  I have stipped off the cowling and the steering wheel and indicator/wiper stalk.  I have undid the allen bolt holding on the barrel and removed all the electrical connections.

However,  how the hell do you get the big spring off that stops the ignition barrel from sliding up the shaft.

Help is required. Please......

Thanks

is it a post 90? i take it you mean the big spline adapter bugger?

did the ignition switch on mine, and ended up going to halford for a bearing puller, one with 3 legs, put a piece of emtal or soemthing across the thole at the top, put the center pin there and the elgs below, and pull off.. and youll be away

the only thing is to remove the actual lock youve got to drill it in 3 excat places i believe?

I used a puller on mine about three weeks ago after some low life pond scum knackered the door locks. It's a b..t..d of a job. Once you get if off, you then have to get it back on again. Its a fun job, but you need a very goog quality small puller.

bodge tip of the day for this, do the allen bolt back up, thread the steering wheel nut back on the column to protect the thread, then bash the column with a hammer!  This should hopefully cause the column to collapse and make the adaptor pop off, then you can extend the column again and re-assemble :)

You only have to drill 1 hole to get the lock out, but it does have to be in the right place.  Haynes shows the measurements :)

Yeehah! Finally made it back on the site after about 250 clicks on the refresh button after the famous CONNECTION PROBLEMS. PLEASE TRY LATER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Anyway, best to buy a car set consisting of the ignition switch, door locks, boot lock and glove box lock. Look on the GSF (German Swedish and French) car parts website. They are reasonably priced, about half that from VW/Audi.
Word of warning. The door locks come with the keys fitted. DO NOT REMOVE THE KEYS, until the door locks are fitted to the car, or you will end up with a fist full of shrappnell and springs, and a burgered lock if you lose any of it.
