I have a 1990 Golf GTi 8v and the tappets have always been a bit noisy when the engine was cold. I had it serviced recently and put an Engine Flush through it and the rattle is worse and more prolonged now even when warm. What do you think the rattle is caused by and is this an expensive repair to alter?
-
how many miles are on your car and what grade of oil did you use when refilling?
-
Its only done 84k, so its not a high mileage for the year of car. I think it was 10/40. Kept it thick as it is an older engine. I didn't want to put Magnatec or Mobil 1 in as it probably would have run straight through it.

not sure then mate 10/40 seems about right for the mileage
-
Reckon it maybe a dodgy tappet, or needing the cam replaced?
-
sometimes running a flush thru it can do more worse than good unless you know the car has been regulary flushed i.e. with each oil change
i'd maybe take it to a couple of garages and get an opinion from them

flushing won't make it any worse.
sounds like at least one tappet is knackered.
