Both my 16 valvers suffer from oil in the air filter. One has a K&N and I didn't want to ruin it with black gunk from the breather so I decided to forgo doing my bit for the environment and I have blanked off the hole in the air box that accepts the pipe and placed the end of the breather on top of the chassis leg, where it is hoped that it will continue to spill its load onto the chassis leg to prevent rust.
Incidentally, the old mk2's seem to get better with use as my smoker 122k easily pastes my wife's 50k without a problem.

dont quote me but i once read in an edition of 'The Golf' that the MK2 16v's did this from the factory and that the problem seemed to disapear with millage. It was so bad on some cars that the inner front wing was steam cleaned.

there was another article in the golf about making a slight rise in the oil breather pipe that returns to the air box to stop oil returning to the filter.

Oil in the air filter, this happens on my 86 8v, 160k ang goin strong?
Hope it aint the begging of the end, it has been doin it ever scince i got it many years ago????

i dug out the mag and basically it says that if the oil stuff is like the mayonnaise goo you find under the oil filler cap, then either your head's gone or its condensation in the crankcase. If your oil cap is ok then so the head.
If the breather hose has gone soft, apparently this can promote oil vapour to rise up into the air box.
