Title: Engine movement
Post by: neil_1821 on 03 March 2007, 11:11
Last weekend i serviced my car and my friend came round to help and he was slightly worried about the amount of movement in my engine just by pushing and pulling it. When i first bought it there wasnt much but now there seems to be a fair amount of play, and when stationary and the car is ideliing at warm you can feel the vibrations through the floor pan, wondering if this is normal? THough the engine mount rubbers could be perished but i'm not too sure.

get someone to sit in your car, in first gear, handbrake on, bonnet up, you looking in the engine bay. get them to lift the clutch as though pulling away and see how much the engine moves about. if it freaks you out, the front mount is shot!

how much would you call a reasonable amount?

There are few things that freak me out

and do you mean to let the engine stall?

No.

Just lift the clutch to biting point, and then about a few mm more so the car starts to want to move forward. When this is done the turning force through the engine will make it look like the engine wants to climb out of the engine bay. If this is the case then the front mount needs replacing.

joe switched my standard (broken) front engine mount for one of his solid versions together with a new front engine bracket about a week ago.
Results - quicker more direct gear shift, better power transfer from engine to wheels. far less engine 'lift'.
a must do conversion!!
